A Shade for Every Style: 10 Must-Have Red Lipsticks for Fall 2016
Going as far back as Cleopatra, women have embraced the ritual of reddening their lips. Throughout history, painting mouths this colour has been associated with prostitution and the lower class, and it has been condemned by the church and viewed as witchcraft. Eventually it shed its negative associations, but one thing never changed: its ability to evoke feminine strength.
This season, red lips are in the spotlight yet again. Pat McGrath reached for cherry at Prada to characterize a strong independent woman, using three shades to get a fade-resistant opacity, and at Proenza Schouler, six models wore a tomato red with bare faces. Meanwhile, Lucia Pica went crimson at Roksanda. The global creative makeup and colour designer for Chanel also focused on the shade for her first cosmetics collection for the brand—a sure sign that red will always be its own fashion statement.
