Paris Fashion Week saw face art in many forms, from wearable updates to out-of-this-world designs

Last season, faux lip rings (Dries Van Noten), face tats (Tommy Hilfiger) and pretend eyebrow piercings (Rodarte) solidified face art as a legit beauty movement. Based on what we’ve seen so far at Paris Fashion Week, it seems artists are treating the face as a canvas again this season.

On the more extreme end of the trend, we saw gold leaf faces at Rick Owens (which reminded us of one of our all time favourite beauty looks, the heavy metal eyelids at Fendi Spring 2012). For the models who weren’t covered in currency, Lucia Pieroni painted thick black rectangles under the eyes, citing Mayan warriors as her inspiration. And at Jacquemus it was a literal interpretation, with models’ faces spliced with drawn on visages inspired by the artist Sebastian Bieniek.

While these looks won’t ever inspire a Lisa Eldridge tutorial, there were a few more toned down takes on the trend. At Rochas, Lucia Pieroni was on deck, drawing what looked like graphic commas on lids and underneath lower lash lines with a matte black liner. While at Anthony Vaccarello, Tom Pecheux created a celestial shape that could definitely live off the runway. If you ask us, it seems made for music-festers, and SXSW is next weekend so you can test drive it ASAP.
