The 2024 Olympic Games are well underway in Paris. And while the skill of the world’s greatest athletes continues to inspire us, we can’t help but also be mesmerized by their impressive beauty looks.
From the gymnastics floor to the pool, there’s no shortage of glam at these games. This year, an especially dazzling bunch of athletes have opted for patriotic makeup, decorative manicures, and superbly styled hair. All to further express their pride for their home countries. And just to flex that there’s nothing they can’t do.
Ahead, we present the best Olympic beauty moments from the 2024 Games so far, including Simone Biles’ mega-viral lip touchup moment.
Who remembers when Rihanna paused her Superbowl show mid-performance to re-apply her Fenty Beauty Invisimatte Instant Setting + Blotting Powder back in 2023? Just when we thought there couldn’t be a more iconic sports-meets-beauty crossover, along comes Simone Biles with another viral makeup application moment. While sitting in the team zone during the artistic gymnastics women’s team final, the golden girl whipped out her own Invisimatte Powder for a quick refresh and used the mirror to help touch up her brown lip look. TikTok’s verdict? Biles appeared to use a NYX Professional Makeup lip pencil to create her signature Olympic lip combo—though the exact shade is still up for speculation. Now that’s what we call GOAT behaviour.
If you know Sha’Carri Richardson, then you know she’s not one to shy away from making a beauty statement on the track. Case in point: Her viral wig toss at the 2023 U.S Track and Field Championships, or any of her ultra-long manicures, like the one captured on Vogue’s August 2024 digital cover. At the Opening Ceremony for this summer’s games, the American sprinter debuted an XXL set of square-shaped nails designed by Florida-based manicurist Kelly Phan. Richardson’s tips were adorned with red, white, silver and blue polish topped with matching rhinestones and USA-inspired nail art. And to think, she hasn’t even set foot on the track yet! We can only imagine what looks she’s got in store for us.
Out on the rugby pitch, Ilona Maher brought her signature red lipstick look to Paris. “I play a sport that is traditionally very masculine. You have to be, supposedly, very manly to play,” the American athlete told Allure. “So I wear makeup [on the pitch] to give a big ‘eff you’ to having to sacrifice my femininity.” Flaunting a French-braided hairstyle that flowed into a ponytail, you couldn’t miss this bronze medalist and her bold red lip (courtesy of Maybelline’s SuperStay Matte Ink lipstick!) during her games.
While we may have Challengers to thank for this summer’s push of the ‘tenniscore’ aesthetic to the mainstream, Coco Gauff is literally living that tenniscore life. At the final match of her first Olympic circuit, Gauff paired a bright red scrunchie with a navy blue New Balance headband. The finishing touch? A cream-coloured ribbon tied into a bow that closely resembled one of Zendaya’s own Challengers press tour hairstyles. Très chic.
Team U.S.A. gymnast Jordan Chiles has consistently wowed us with her Olympic beauty looks. You can always spot Chiles wearing graphic silver and white eyeliner, a red ombre lip, or a striking black cat-eye. As for hair, she opted for slicked-back, polished buns topped off with decorative ribbons to match her bedazzled leotards. And on her nails, red, white, and blue French tips in the spirit of the United States did the trick.
