With designers opting for pale, neutral polishes, simple manicures and (possibly, worst of all) French tips on the Spring 2013 runways, nail art fanatics had to look elsewhere for inspiration. However, we’re just a few shows into the Fall 2013 collections and things are looking up: there are already some great nail art designs coming out of New York Fashion Week.

Black nail polish—which is always a nail art favourite for detail work—was the main event at BCBG Max Azria. OPI painted models’ nails with “Black Oynx” and then added a matte top coat. We’ll consider this at the “easy” end of the nail art scale.

At Holmes & Yang (Katie Holme’s almost-eponymous collection) nails were buffed and bare, save for a bright blue stripe painted at the end of each tip. Not French manicure-style, though—this horizontal swipe sat directly in the middle of the nail white and tapered off at one end. The colour of choice was OPI “Dating A Royal” and we think this fresh take on decorated tips is one worth adapting ASAP. (Plus, nail art newbies, even you will be able to accomplish it!)

Stripes got even more elaborate at Creatures of the Wind, where CND did graphic-to-the-point-of-disorienting designs that they dubbed a graffiti manicure. Multiple versions of the high-energy pattern were created, including neon brights and bird egg-blue.

And while we have yet to see the final look, we know that Butter London will be up to something amazing during New York Fashion Week. Earlier this week they Instagrammed a picture showing many boxes of colourful gemstones—meaning blinged out nail art is soon to follow.
