There’s no question that films these days are playing a large role in the fashion and beauty industry (think Net-A-Porter x Hunger Games and M.A.C x Maleficent). So it’s kind of expected to see us all regularly channeling our favourite film heroines, especially when these collaborations make it so easy to cop. And who doesn’t want to borrow  some of that leading lady confidence? While rocking our favourite movie looks is usually saved for Halloween, that doesn’t mean we can’t try to incorporate movie-inspired hair and makeup in our everyday lives. So this week, we asked Beauty Panel to do just that. From Katniss Everdeen’s much-coveted braid to Cher Horowitz’s ‘90s hair and makeup, Beauty Panel members are showing off their favourite movie-inspired beauty looks they’re rocking all year round.

Challenge 72: Which movie heroine inspires your everyday beauty? See the answers now! »

We’re obsessed with The Hunger Games, right down to the messy braid Katniss sported in the film, so we can see why Genevieve Peeke of Gen in the City too wanted to try out this look (minus the bow and arrow, of course). With her natural makeup and an easy-to-do braid, Peeke shows us how to get this look in a flash. For all the fashion kids out there, at one point or another, we all wanted Cher Horowitz’s wardrobe. Thanks to Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” music video, ‘90s nostalgia is hitting us all over again, especially for Beauty Funk’s Sarah Muncaster. Putting her own spin on the Cher’s half up/half down hairstyle, we wouldn’t be surprised if this look makes a comeback in a huge way. But if you’re eyeing for something more soft and romantic, then Gerry Xun of The Bunnie Hole’s rendition of Larissa (“Lara”) Antipova from Doctor Zhivago is the one you should look to. Aware that she has a different face structure from Julie Christie, Gerry made the look her own.

I almost chose Josie Grossie (from Never Been Kissed), but finally settled on my other favourite 90’s movie character: Cher Horowitz. Perhaps it’s Iggy Azalea’s Clueless-inspired music video for “Fancy,” or perhaps it’s the fact that Cher Horowitz has been one of my idols since age nine, but my hair and beauty looks lately have been channeling a very 90s feel. I call this particular look “Edgy Cher Horowitz.” I’ve been doing Cher’s classic half up/half down hairdo, but adding a Miley Cyrus-inspired bun on top. Pairing this look with a smoky copper eye and an easy nude lip gives it a very sultry, summer vibe.

Larissa (“Lara”) Antipova, the beautiful enigmatic woman in the tragic love story, Doctor Zhivago, captured my heart and although it was Julie Christie’s stellar performance that brought Lara to life, the makeup had a classic timeless quality that helped to set the mood.

1. Start with a matte base with ample coverage to give the skin a velvety finish. Then contour the cheekbones slightly and bring a warm dusty blush from the apples up to the temples and slightly on the chin.
2. Apply matte white eye shadow all over the lid up to the brow bone. If you have pale skin and find white hard to show up, adding a white cream shadow should help. Taking a matte brown a few shades darker than your skin, shade the outer corner of your eye, bringing it slightly through the socket, making sure it remains a soft shadow rather than a sharp graphic line.
3. A stroke of liquid liner goes along the upper lash line followed by a full set of fine, slightly wispy lashes and a soft brown liner along the lower lash line.
4. Pull the makeup look together by lining the lips with a rich nude liner and a cool toned nude pink or mauve lipstick.

If I could channel a movie heroine for my daily hair and makeup inspiration it would definitely be Katniss from The Hunger Games! Braids are definitely trending right now and are a simple way to add some fun to any hairstyle! I love the matte, bronzed skin that Katniss always sports and the brown liner that really works at accentuating her eyes while still looking natural. She also always has a sort-of berry pink lip colour that just accentuates her natural lip colour. Perfect for everyday wear!

Products used: Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream, Wet’N’Wild Mattifying Powder, Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess Bronzer in “Medium,” Maybelline Master Highlight Blush in “Pink Rose,” Benefit Erase Paste, Stila Stay All Day Liquid Liner in “Brown,” Make Up For Ever Smoky Extravagant Mascara, Korres Mango Butter Lipstick in “Natural Pink”
