“Growing up, my family really embraced natural beauty,” says Joy Sunday over the phone from New York City. “They didn’t place a lot of emphasis on physical beauty, so I was a late-bloomer when it came to makeup.”
The 27-year-old actress, who is known for her roles in Dear White People and Wednesday, says that it took her a while to realize that her peers at school were even wearing makeup. “I thought everybody just looked like that when they woke up in the morning,” she laughs. “I never had that experience of playing with my mom’s makeup like a lot of kids do. Instead, I really got to be a kid.”
Fast forward to today and things are looking quite different for Sunday. Earlier this year, she was announced as the newest global ambassador for Lancôme, something she says she’s particularly proud of because of her past. “I have a really healthy relationship with makeup and beauty, because I was able to discover and define it for myself, before I was able to discover how beauty can be defined by others.”
Sunday’s latest work with Lancôme is fronting the campaign for the newly launched Hypnôse Drama mascara, the brand’s most volumizing mascara ever, featuring deep onyx pigments that give you the darkest, most smouldering finish you could possibly want. “The more I apply, the more volume I get; [it’s] never too much,” says Sunday. More is more, indeed!
“This partnership really validated for me that aside from whatever drew Lancôme to me physically, there was something about my spirit that they appreciated, which is how I arrived at my idea of beauty in the first place.” —Souzan Michael Galway
