Issa Rae is CoverGirl’s Latest Brand Ambassador

When I want a quick cry, I think back to the Season 1 finale of HBO’s Insecure. It reminds me of everything I did wrong in my 20s, and how even if you’re glad those days are done, you never really forget those monster eff-ups.
Writer, YouTuber and actress Issa Rae might not have known she could bring me and (countless others) to tears of laughter and pain but her ability to do so is yielding results. Today beauty industry behemoth Covergirl announced that Issa Rae will be their newest beauty ambassador.
“I remember being an awkward black girl in high school, reading the pages of my favorite magazines, casually flipping through @COVERGIRL ads, singing their slogan in my head. Never EVER in my life did I imagine I’d be one,” wrote Rae on her instagram feed. “I am SO honored and SO excited for what’s to come.”
This seems like such a perfect fit for a beauty brand because of how much time Rae’s on-screen alter ego spends rapping and applying makeup in front of the mirror. In an early episode I so remember watching as Issa gained confidence while applying various lip colours and eye shadows. She then stepped back deeming a particular look, “too aggressive,” and went back to her normal look. One can only imagine how many of us watching were screaming from the sofa: GO FOR IT!

It’s a point that Rae acknowledged in a Covergirl press release. “My character is ever-evolving, and makeup is a tool to help transform my persona – whether for a role I play in content that I produce, or the different roles I take on in my life,” said Rae.
It’s the kind of thing we all do, all the time and it’s a gentle reminder that beauty comes in, all skin tones, all quirky personalities, and all types of profane language. Season two wrapped up Sunday September 5, and there were more tears from this sad sack writer because, well right now Season Three seems. So. Far. Away.
