I’ve lived most of my life with what I call ghost brows—not from a tragic over-plucking incident in the early 2000s, but because they’re naturally blonde, barely-there whispers across my face. After years of chasing the perfect shape and shade—and testing every product and trend in search of definition that didn’t feel like a costume—the beauty world pulled the ultimate plot twist: bleached brows are back. Go figure.
The closest I’ve ever come to brow enlightenment was last year, when I started seeing Haley Bogaert, owner of HBFace, a beauty brand and studio with locations in Toronto and Oakville. Bogaert put me on a full regimen: eyebrow tints every four to six weeks, laminations and shaping every eight. I went religiously for six months, and for the first time, I felt like I had a real brow identity—natural, polished, and actually flattering. Then life happened. Between toddler chaos and work deadlines, I fell off the wagon. But I’m still a true believer in the transformative power of a good brow.
Why are eyebrows so transformative? “They have the power to shape your face, and add balance and structure,” says Bogaert. Simply put, eyebrows frame your face. And in 2025, there’s no one-size-fits-all. The trends run the gamut from sleek, sculpted arches (think Bella Hadid) to soft, brushed-up fluff (hello, Lily Collins). But if you’re considering a major reshape, the experts agree: leave it to the pros.
“Seek out someone with experience—and have a plan,” says Shannon Calvert, national brow and beauty authority for Benefit Cosmetics Canada. “At Benefit, we start by mapping out the eyebrows and then use a combination of wax and tweezers to create a unique shape that fits you.”
Whether you’re curious about brow lamination, considering a shape overhaul, or just trying to keep things in place during peak humidity, there’s a strategy suited to your lifestyle and aesthetic. Here are pro-approved tips to unlocking your best eyebrows, including insights on trends and finding your perfect shade.
One of the buzziest brow treatments of the last few years? Eyebrow lamination. “It’s like a perm for your eyebrows. It flattens out the hair, almost doubling the size of the brows,” says Bogaert, who notes it’s the most popular service at her studio. The results last about four to eight weeks (depending on your brow texture) and leave you with a shinier, more structured look. “We always include threading and trimming with this service because the brows appear twice as big—so we want to manage them a bit and ensure they are even,” she adds.
The magic of lamination is that it gives brows that full, brushed-up appearance without relying on pencils or gels every day. But there’s one thing you shouldn’t skip: aftercare. “We use moisturizing masks on the brow hairs after colouring it, but post-lamination care is often overlooked,” says Calvert, who swears by nightly conditioning. Her go-to: Benefit’s Whoa So Soft Brow Oil. “I just massage a drop into my brows before bed,” she says.
Another pro tip to getting the best results from your lamination service? Resist the urge to overbook. “Less is more,” warns Bogaert. “Spacing appointments eight to ten weeks apart helps prioritize the health of your brows. Overdoing it can cause fallout—and nobody wants that.”
Build Better Brows
Tame, lift and shape—no lamination required—with brow gels.
With what feels like an endless sea of brow pencils, pomades, gels and powders out there, finding your perfect shade can feel downright impossible, especially when you’re trying to match online. “I always recommend visiting a studio, like HBFace, Sephora or a Benefit [Brow Bar], to be matched by a professional, especially for your first time,” says Bogaert.
A good rule of thumb? Go a touch lighter than your natural brows, and when in doubt, lean neutral or cool-toned instead of warm. If you’re a light blonde, though, you can get away with going slightly darker. “If your blonde has a cool undertone, a taupe shade is perfect,” suggests Calvert.
When it comes to filling or tinting, Bogaert’s rule is to match your brows to the roots of the hair on your head—not your brows themselves. “I always try to match them to the root of the hair,” she says. The goal? Brows that look effortless, natural, and totally in sync with the rest of you.
Fill In The Blanks
Whether feathery or defined, your perfect shade sets the tone—and shape.
If skinny brows aren’t your thing, why not go big? Brooke Shields made them iconic, Cara Delevingne brought them back and Lily Collins proves that full, bushy brows are more than just a passing trend. “I think Lily’s brows are perfection—they remind me of a modern version of Audrey Hepburn’s,” says Calvert of the Emily in Paris star.
The vibe? Soft, fluffy arches that enhance your natural shape while still making a bold statement. “Trending or not, I’ll always love a fuller brow,” says Bogaert, who prefers them with a more sculpted edge rather than left wispy and wild. “What I mean by sculpted are brows that are trimmed, which helps define them a bit more, meaning the arch is more substantial,” she adds, citing Cara as her ultimate brow crush.
If you’re lacking a little natural fullness, try a tinting service—those barely-there baby hairs will pick up colour and instantly beef up your brows. No time for a salon visit? A quick swipe of tinted brow mascara can work similar magic in seconds.
