Inside the World’s Best-Smelling Hotels

Hoteliers are harnessing fragrance to craft immersive escapes.

About a decade ago, I checked into the Palihouse in Santa Monica, a beautifully restored 1920s Mediterranean garden-style hotel with plenty of old-world charm. Like any fancy-pants Cali retreat, it came with a few celebrity sightings: Anthony Hopkins breezing through the lobby with nothing but a duffel bag, and the statuesque (and drop-dead gorgeous, even at 7 am) Iman casually grabbing breakfast clad in leopard-print pyjamas.

But what really struck me wasn’t the star power of this property or the grand architecture. It was the scent. A hypnotic fragrance lingered in the lobby and drifted through the corridors—a warm blend of amber, oud and leather that was nothing short of intoxicating. During my stay, I discovered that the hotel had bottled this custom creation and called Saint Pali, made from 18 organic essential oils and sold in rollerball form. Naturally, I bought one on the spot.

Years later, while staying in L.A., I detoured to Palihouse West Hollywood just to replenish my stash. And while some people collect matchbooks from restaurants or magnets from their travels, after this trip, I started collecting fragrances—scents that bring me right back to a place and time.

That’s the power of a signature scent; it transforms a stay into something unforgettable. Increasingly, hoteliers are leaning into this invisible amenity, harnessing fragrance to create immersive experiences that linger long after checkout. Here are the best luxury hotel scents.

The Rosewood Carlyle Hotel

More than just a place to stay, The Carlyle is an iconic institution. Since its opening in 1930, it has played host to royalty and celebrities, including the likes of Princess Diana, Audrey Hepburn, Prince William, Princess Kate Middleton and Cardi B. It’s rumoured that a secret entrance once facilitated clandestine meetings between Marilyn Monroe and John F.Kennedy, adding to its mystique. From the stunning black-and-white marble lobby adorned with Art Deco details to the luxurious suites, some featuring baby grand pianos, The Carlyle epitomizes the perfect Upper East Side retreat. During the Met Gala, the hotel’s elegant lobby becomes a runway of its own, with stars like Rihanna, Margot Robbie and Naomi Campbell among the parade of fashion royalty stepping out in their finest attire.

Launched in 2023 in collaboration with Brooklyn-based perfumers D.S. & Durga, The Carlyle Eau de Parfum captures history in a bottle. Created by the husband-and-wife team David and Kavi Moltz, this floral fragrance draws inspiration from the hotel’s signature honeysuckle-scented bar soap, a guest favourite for over four decades. With top notes of lime, bergamot, and neroli, heart notes of linden blossom, honeysuckle, and rose, and a base of sandalwood, moss, and hay, this bespoke scent now enhances the hotel’s shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, alongside the original soap.

One&Only Reethi Rah

The Maldives isn’t just a postcard fantasy—it’s where A-listers actually go when they want to disappear. Think Leonardo DiCaprio trading in yachts for overwater villas or Idris Elba slipping off the grid with a screensaver-worthy view. Naturally, One&Only Reethi Rah has become the spot for celeb-level R&R—Sofia Richie Grainge and Elliot Grainge even picked it for their honeymoon (honestly, same).

The resort itself feels like a real-life White Lotus season—minus the murder mystery, plus a lot more star power. 122 thatch-roofed villas, 12 private beaches, endless boardwalks stretching over turquoise water. Each villa gets its own pool, a slice of sand, and ocean views that look straight-up CGI. Inspired by Dubai’s Palm Islands, Reethi Rah is where design flex meets barefoot luxury, wrapped in just the right amount of secrecy.

Meet Castaway, the hotel’s signature scent that basically bottles the Maldives. Crafted in Grasse, France (aka the perfume capital of the world), this unisex fragrance smells like a vacation you never want to end. Think juicy grapefruit up top, grounded by amber and cedarwood, with just enough coconut-y breeze to make you wonder if you accidentally spritzed on sunscreen—but like, the chic kind. It’s beachy, earthy, and a little mysterious—your passport in a bottle.

Hôtel Le Bistrol

Steeped in history, Hôtel Le Bistrol is a prestigious Parisian pad that has been operating since 1925. Since then, it’s greeted a host of famous guests including Ava Gardner, Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth—and more recently Rachel MacAdams and Marion Cotillard. Perched on the Right Bank in Paris’s 8th arrondissement, it has all the makings of a palace: think chandeliers, marble and all the regal trimmings. But thanks to a decade-long glow-up (which finished in 2018), the vibe is less stuffy monarch, more cool aristocrat. The real star of the place? A platinum-furred resident cat named Fa-raon, who struts through the lobby like he owns the joint.

The hotel’s gardens aren’t just pretty, they’re record-breaking. Spanning 1,277 square meters, they’re the largest of any stay in Paris and the muse behind its signature scent by perfumer Jean-Michel Duriez. The fragrance, Les Jardins du Bristol, feels like a stroll through a dewy courtyard at golden hour: green and airy with lily of the valley, rose, and freesia, then warmed up with sandalwood. Freshly cut grass drifts in too (yes, really), layered with cedar and a touch of leather as a wink to the hotel’s gilded past. It’s luxury bottled, with just enough edge to keep it interesting.

St. Regis Kanai Resort

Luxurious beachfront property? Check. Jaw-dropping architecture? Double check. Enough dining options to make you cancel your return flight? Triple check. That’s the vibe at St. Regis Kanai Resort, the Riviera Maya’s new It hotel, just 40 minutes from Cancun airport. Since opening in 2023, it’s been a full-on celeb magnet. Alessandra Ambrosio, Gia Coppola, Zoey Deutch and their entourages have all checked in. Basically, it’s where luxury meets paparazzi-proof paradise.

Launched in 2015 and now spritzed across all 40+ properties, the St. Regis’s signature scent, Caroline’s Four Hundred, is as extra as its backstory. Named after Caroline Astor, the OG matriarch of the hotel’s founding family, and her guest list of 400 New York society elites, the fragrance is basically old-money glamour in a bottle. Perfumer Carlos Huber blended Caroline’s fave American beauty roses with green stems, white lilies, quince, apple, and cherry blossom to create something crisp, floral, and just a little decadent. Think Gilded Age soirée, but make it modern.

1 Hotel Central Park

Opened in 2015, the 1 Hotel Central Park houses 229 eco-chic rooms in the middle of New York City, and proves sustainability doesn’t mean sacrificing style. Before you even hit the lobby, you’re greeted by a three-story living wall—a lush façade made from recycled materials that also conserves water. Inside, it’s all about thoughtful details. Picture reclaimed wood furniture, hangers made from recycled cardboard, hemp Keetsa mattresses wrapped in organic cotton and even a Google Nexus tablet to track your carbon footprint. Green living, but make it luxe.

Every 1 Hotel has its own vibe—but it all starts with the same smell. Their signature fragrance, Kindling, is diffused throughout each lobby, wrapping you in notes of eucalyptus, cedarwood and oakwood, grounded by musk and moss. It’s fresh, woodsy, and just the right amount of sexy—basically the scent equivalent of a weekend upstate in an oversized cashmere sweater. And yes, you can take it home: room sprays, diffusers, and soy candles mean your apartment can smell just as effortlessly cool.

Fairmont Pacific Rim

These days, it’s all foodies, fashion and five-star stays in Vancouver. Leading the charge: the Fairmont Pacific Rim. Thanks to the city’s “Hollywood North” status, the hotel has basically become a celeb crash pad—Tom Cruise, George Clooney, Scarlett Johansson, you name it. Beyond the star power, it’s the views that steal the show: the North Shore Mountains, Stanley Park and Coal Harbour, all framed by a sleek West Coast-meets-Asian design that makes this one of Canada’s most luxe addresses.

The hotel doesn’t just look good—it smells iconic. Back in 2011, Fairmont teamed up with cult fragrance house Le Labo to create Rose 31, a scent that now greets guests across all of its properties. It’s not your grandma’s rose either: the fragrance layers the floral with spicy cumin, smoky cedar, and warm amber for a vibe that’s equal parts sexy and sophisticated. Basically, the lobby smells like luxury bottled.
