Every year, Escada launches a new spring/summer fragrance inspired by a different fruity or floral element. This year, the fashion house has taken their annual scent in a new, more succulent direction with Cherry in the Air (from $25, sephora.com).
To induct the new edition into Escada’s fragrance range, the brand kicked off the launch of Cherry in the Air last week in Washington, D.C. Why Washington, you might ask? Well as it turns out, the capitol city and the perfume have quite a bit in common. In 1912, the mayor of Tokyo gifted more than 3,000 cherry trees to the United States capitol city, a symbolic gesture to mark the growing relationship between the two countries. When the cherry blossoms bloom in Washington it signifies the beginning of spring—and the arrival of the blossoms has become such an iconic event in the city that they host an annual Cherry Blossom Festival to celebrate.
While in Washington, I had the opportunity to learn more about Escada Cherry in the Air during a fragrance immersion with the brand’s experts. They spoke of the inspiration for the scent and of those long, carefree days of summer. The fragrance was born from the enticing thought of cycling with friends through orchards in the south of France and picking the cherries on your way to a hillside picnic. As for the top notes of the perfume, it’s infused with a heavy dose of the summer fruit, as well as raspberry and mandarin. Heart notes of coconut and marshmallow dial up the sweetness, making it a true gourmand scent that evokes digging into freshly flambéed Cherries Jubilee over a scoop of vanilla ice cream. In the dry down of the fragrance, comforting sandalwood and musk balance out the sweeter elements to provide a layered and rich base. Without a doubt, a few spritzes of this light and airy scent and winter’s cruel chill will be a distant memory.
