Dior’s New Cuir Saddle Fragrance Turns Leather into Something Unexpectedly Modern

The latest from Dior’s La Collection Privée is an ode to a beloved bag and a rewrite of the leather-accord playbook.

Leather and perfumery have a long historical connection—more than 800 years. What started as a practical fix—masking the animalistic smells of the tanning process with labdanum, vanilla and sandalwood—eventually evolved into smoky accords like Russian leather, defined by birch tar and the scent of waterproofed hides. For centuries, leather fragrances have leaned dark, heavy and resolutely bold.

With Cuir Saddle, the newest addition to Dior’s La Collection Privée, perfume-creation director Francis Kurkdjian didn’t just add another chapter to leather’s fragrant story; he rewrote it. Starting with a familiar foundation, Kurkdjian took the woody and smoky accord and lent it a lush yet clean quality. “I call it ‘cleaner.’ It’s clean but not like laundry; it’s more subtle,” he says, likening the scent to “a drop of black in a bucket of white paint.”

And while leather notes are well established, they’re ultimately an abstract idea. As Kurkdjian reminds us, “a leather accord doesn’t exist; it’s something you recreate.” In fact, when he arrived at Dior in 2021, leather scents had been removed from the collection. After proposing a revamped take, Kurkdjian headed for the Dior archives outside of Paris. But he landed on a far more recent reference point than anything in the history books.

The inspiration—and name—for the scent came from the brand’s beloved Saddle handbag, which first appeared on the runway at the Spring 2000 show courtesy of John Galliano. Kurkdjian was especially moved by the way the curved bag is carried close to the body. “I tried to capture the shape of the leather and then fill it with something pure, white and fluffy,” he says, noting an intentional shift away from leather’s traditionally heady, smoky reputation.

The fragrance is lightly musky and floral—though not in any specific way. “It’s more of a feeling than a scent,” Kurkdjian says. In short, Cuir Saddle is sensuous and second-skin-like and feels truly unisex. It’s a little sweet, with the barest touch of fruitiness evoking dried plums.

Leather, Kurkdjian notes, tends to hold on to perfume beautifully (just ask anyone who’s had a bottle leak in their favourite purse), and this idea of a fragrance “stamp” also appealed to him. “When someone wears a little too much perfume and they give you a kiss on the cheek, it’s like they leave an imprint,” he says. Spritzed onto the skin or into the hair, Cuir Saddle spills its notes like the precious contents of a handbag before settling into place as though it’s always been there.
