Diary of a self-tan first-timer

Given that I have an olive complexion, the idea of self-tanning has scarcely ever crossed my mind. That is, until recently – when I looked down to find my post-winter legs had turned a pale yellow. So I decided to pop my self-tan cherry and delve into the wonderful world of bronze/potentially orange.

After reading the FASHION “how to” on self-tanning, I’m ready to take on the tan. I’m such a neophyte that I didn’t even know exfoliation and moisturization was key prep work.

Day One:

My product of choice is L’Oréal’s Sublime Bronze airbrush mist ($15, drug stores). I find it’s much easier to apply when you hold the can upside down.

A few hours later, I’m sitting with the boyfriend and I ask him, “Babe, what’s that burning smell?” Without looking up from his computer, he replies “Yeah, that’s you, honey.”

The smell of self-tan is definitely a miss. But I persevere.

Day Two:

I wake up and find I don’t really see a difference yet. I’ll need to ease off on my elbow creases though; it’s looking a little too clementine in that area! Still not smelling good but I must deal.

Day Three:

Ooh, I’m golden! It’s pretty subtle but I’m no longer looking sun-deprived. I love that I have no streaks. My fear of looking like streaky bacon (as we say back home in England) was unwarranted. I still smell strange but copious layers of scented Body Shop body butter are masking it well.

Day Four:

After four days, the self-tan has worked a treat and I’m now a nice sun-kissed colour. Not the usual colour I go in the sun, which is a darker brown, but nevertheless it looks natural and I’m happy with it. I think this may become an annual spring ritual!
