Let’s be clear: rarely pretty and almost never accessible, the beauty at Comme des Garcons shows is never setting the direction for where hair and makeup is headed for the upcoming season. While many designers pare back when their clothes are complicated, Kawakubo seems to prefer hair and makeup that’s just as outlandish as her garments, and has never met a wig she couldn’t get on board with, thanks to French hairdresser and longtime collaborator, Julien d’Ys. These are looks that exist entirely on their own and are crazy, slightly absurd and will never be re-created in a tutorial.
In anticipation of tonight’s Met Ball in honour of Rei Kawakubo, let’s revisit some of the designer’s kookiest looks. And hope that someone shows up tonight with their hair in a cloud like ball.
