Coffee Fragrances Are the Pick-Me-Up You Need This Fall

As a perpetually tired girl, a good chunk of my life revolves around coffee. There’s the cup of Nespresso I drink first thing in the morning, the extra-large black Americano I sip at the office, the mid-afternoon brew I reach for when the 3 p.m. slump inevitably hits, the post-dinner shot of espresso that keeps the girls’ night dish session going well past our bedtimes. And when temperatures cool down and the mood calls for a cozy fragrance, I add yet another jolt of caffeine to my rotation: a spritz of perfume inspired by freshly roasted beans. Yves Saint Laurent’s Black Opium perfect blend of coffee, vanilla and sandalwood has long been a staple in my fragrance wardrobe—but lately, new roast-forward contenders have entered the chat.

Like the real thing, coffee fragrances are bold and addictive. They radiate an irresistible warmth that feels as familiar, comforting and grounding as the first sip of the day. “Coffee is instantaneously recognizable as a scent profile, without feeling overly popular,” says Marianne Beauséjour, the fragrance coordinator at Etiket, a luxury beauty retailer that specializes in niche, hard-to-find scents.

The fragrance industry is in its gourmand era, and coffee notes are a natural fit in dessert-inspired scents. Coffee is often paired with vanilla, caramel, tonka bean or chocolate to play up its sweet side and add a hint of depth. As milky fragrances also gain in popularity, Beauséjour notes it’s also often used with lactonic notes to add richness to frothy undertones.

But it’s not all sweet espresso drinks topped with whipped cream—dark-roast notes also make the perfect addition to woody juices, where their smokiness brings out the sultry side of oud, sandalwood or cedar, as well as spicy blends where they lend a sophisticated edge to the likes of cardamom and pepper. Delicate floral notes also play well with coffee’s dark side, blending into a luxurious, velvety scent that’s equal parts earthy and uplifting.

No matter its pairing, there’s something deeply comforting about the scent of coffee that creates an immediate sense of intimacy and coziness. “It’s a moment of reflection before you start your day, or your favourite barista smiling as they hand you your drink,” explains Beauséjour. It’s no surprise that at a time when we’re all craving a slower pace and connection, the popularity of coffee-based perfumes is surging.

Coffee fragrances are far from a one-note wonder—from decadent sweet concoctions to dark and spicy blends to luxe floral juices with a twist, there’s a whole menu of options to choose from. Scroll on to find your next caffeine buzz.
