They said/We said: Everyone freaks out as Missoni for Target launch crashes the retailer’s site. We present a full recap

Missoni for Target, the latest designer collaboration with the American retailer launched yesterday online and at all Target locations and no one, not even Target, expected such a high demand for the line.

Shortly after launching online at 6:00 a.m. EST the Target site crashed leaving shoppers frantic for ways to try to buy the coveted clothes. The site was back up later that morning but continued to crash throughout the day with customers resorting Target’s mobile site or calling customer service. Blogs like Racked and Fashionista gave shoppers a play by play of the site’s status.

Now it’s reported that most stores are sold out of the collection—but fear not—a few items are left online and currently, if you search “Missoni for Target” on Ebay, 22,220 results are found. Happy bidding.

THEY SAID…

Racked: “Instead of Missoni for Target, all we’re getting is this cute dog. Looks like the site went down right before 9 a.m., probably when everyone on the East Coast arrived in their offices and logged onto their computers. Stay tuned for updates.” [Racked]

Fashionista: “Cue a million disappointed shoppers. But while you may have missed a good night’s sleep in anticipation of the collection, don’t get too despondent. Target, via their very responsive twitter account @TargetStyle, is assuring customers that the site should be back up soon, promising an estimate at around 11:00am today. (It’s now 11:15. Still down.)” [Fashionista]

Racked: “UPDATE (5 MINUTES AFTER WE POSTED THIS STORY): The Missoni for Target mobile site seems to have crashed as well—clicking on products gets you to an error page. Stay tuned.  [Racked]

Racked: “12:33 P.M: Aaand, it’s back up.” [Racked]

Racked: “UPDATE 2:25 P.M.: A Racked tipster says that right now it’s taking about 7 minutes to reach a real live human being on the phone at the above number and, after getting through, was told that no phone orders for anything—Missoni or otherwise—can be placed right now over the phone. Sounds like the entire Target system is down at Target HQ to us. Our tipster writes: ‘I was told to call back in a few hours.’” [Racked]

WE SAID…

Randi Bergman, online editor: “Thankfully we’re not even privy to this insanity yet. When Target comes to Canada in 2013, I’m expecting some serious knocking-down-doors, missing-tooth mayhem. Bring it!”
