Sometimes you look and something coming down the runway and just think, “Huh?”

That happened last night at Lanvin when a black and white floral pouf dress appeared at Alber Elbaz’s fall 2011 show. As I watched the booted mini pass by, my next thought was “‘80s Wayne Clark”. Then, I noticed that the outfit was on Freja Beha Erichsen, and since designers tend to put their most important outfits on the better-known models, I wondered: should we to take this look as directional? Will we be seeing more poufy, oversized florals on the spring 2012 runway? Hmmm….

As for the rest of the collection, Elbaz toyed with inflated ruffles on knit dresses, cape-sleeved gowns, severe dresses with metal edges, brown leather shifts and the oversized costume jewellery he has turned into a house signature. He also showed dresses in the same crinkled silk that has emerged as a Paris trend.

Yesterday was also a major shoe day with a party at the new Sergio Rossi store (aqua python platforms, anyone?), a presentation of Hogans by Karl Lagerfeld with the designer’s name scribbled on silver wedges, and a visit to Roger Vivier.

Basquiat-inspired Roger Vivier clutch.

There I saw pumps with gold studs, in a ’70s-hued gingham—mustard, burgundy and teal—with an elegant new stiletto heel that extends up over the fabric of the shoe. But I fell head over heels for the clutches in neon sheared mink, with Basquiat-inspired crystal faces, or heart-shaped sequins.

Vivier plans to bring a limited edition collection of footwear made with feathers and embroidery by couture ateliers Lesage and Lemarie to Holt Renfrew next fall. Start saving your pennies now.
