A Place for Philophiles to Revisit the Céline of Yore

Gather round, friends.

On September 2, the official @celine Instagram account got a, um, makeover. Removing all traces of the brand under its former creative leader—yep, it’s been wiped clean of all things Phoebe Philo—the account now has just 19 posts to its name, all of which signify the beginning of the Hedi Slimane reign, starting with the unveiling of the new Céline logo, with its “more balanced” typography and removal of the accent aigu on the letter e. I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised, considering one of Slimane’s first moves at Yves Saint Laurent was dropping the name Yves. (Whatever, #YSL4Life.)

The very next day, an account called @oldceline popped up on Instagram. The profile image of this account, fittingly, is the old logo, and its first post is an article from The Gentlewoman reminding us that through her work at Céline, Philo “cut through fashion’s tired fantasy, turning the dust-gathering Parisian house into a platform for sharp reality and hyper-luxurious clothing.”

The account thus far has been posting a slew of images from the Philo era, including campaigns like the one starring Joan Didion and runway looks from iconic collections such as the sculptural drapes of Spring 2013 and statement coats from Fall 2012. Early followers of the account include Man Repeller’s Leandra Medine, entrepreneur and influencer Ramya Giangola, and street style photographers Tommy Ton and Dan Roberts.

As the new Céline under Hedi Slimane begins to take shape—with the aforementioned new logo and recently revealed new handbag style, and his first show for the French house just days away—it’s a place for Philophiles to revisit for comfort, scrolling through and celebrating what once was.
