In an effort to shine some light on the unmentionables we work so diligently to conceal 364 days a year, National Underwear Day was founded in NYC back in 2003. Boasting a runway show in Times Square, the event aims to promote body acceptance and feeling comfortable in your own skin. Obviously, we’re all for it.
To mark this cheeky occasion, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite indie underwear brands changing the face of lingerie today. What could be more important than the layer you wear closest to your skin?

1. Fortnight Lingerie
You might recognize this homegrown Canadian label from the “Super Sexy CPR” video that went viral awhile back (trust us, Google it). Manufactured in downtown Toronto, Fortnight’s formula is a hybrid of classic cuts with modern functionality—think ladylike meets Lululemon.
What started as a sensual photography blog on a quest to reinvent romance eventually evolved into a more tangible endeavor. Valentine’s mantra is all about keeping it natural, which means no padding, underwire, or tight spandex—just 100% pure comfort. What could be sexier than that?
Creating the concept of “loungerie,” London-based designer Kriss Soonik commit herself to designing pieces that effortlessly mix Nordic minimalism with New York cool. Expect to find Valley Of The Dolls-esque lace confections mingling happily with athletic details—comfy and come-hither.
Founded by a former design director at Victoria Secret and the co-founder of Kiki de Montparnasse, this line of boudoir lingerie is a cult hit among the fashion set. With a tagline like “inspires dressing up and undressing,” you know it’s got to be good.
8. Sokoloff Lingerie
Designed and made in Quebec, Sokoloff Lingerie is a young company dedicated to exceptional fit, comfort, and craftsmanship. Their diverse catalog of shapes promote a healthy body image with designs that are as supportive as they are seductive.
In a world that’s typically pushed up and overdone, Negative is the intentional antithesis. They adhere to a strict policy of less fake, frills, and fabric, so that what remains is simply uncomplicated and carefully considered design.
10. Knix Wear
Launched in 2013 via a crowdfunding campaign (which pre-sold over $60,000 in high tech knickers), Knix Wear incorporates patented Fresh Fix Technology into their designs, which wicks away moisture and eliminates odor, making them the ultimate workout underwear. Oh, and did we mention they’re completely seamless? See you never, annoying legging panty lines!
6. For Love & Lemons
An omnipresent staple on festival babes everywhere, For Love & Lemons is the modern day equivalent of a gypsy queen mixed with a flower child. Focusing on boho extras like custom made lace and engineered placement embroidery, these are pieces that are definitely not meant to be covered up.
9. RELIQUE
A belief that lingerie should be an extension of outfit and not hidden away led co-founders Chelsea Carson and Kait Vasquez Pieces to create a line comprised of bold, hand-dyed patterns and unusual fabrications—wallflowers need not apply.
7. Bazsarózsa
Translating to “peony flower” in Hungarian, it’s no surprise that bazsarózsa is an environmentally conscious line produced from the softest organic cotton jersey. Infused with subtle details (such as hardware from France and elastic from Japan), the designs embrace a feminine sensibility with a modern fit and feel.
