Coco Capitán: Speaking out on the Future of Fashion

“What are we going to do with all this future?”

The envelope for Gucci’s Fall 2017 invitation featured an image of an ouroboros devouring its tail. Inside, there was a vinyl record that had a sleeve with this hand-scrawled message from Coco Capitán: “What are we going to do with all this future?” The 25-year-old Spanish artist captured a timely sentiment that we’re all feeling, whether it’s about politics, climate change—or publishing. Will magazines be around in another 40 years? Another five? For me, this evocative crystal-embellished Gucci mask is a surreal metaphor for a future that is dazzling but unknowable. And, like the mythical ouroboros depicted on Alessandro Michele’s invite, it’s a reminder that we’re always in a state of introspection and reinvention.
