After shocking the fashion industry with his decision to drop out of NYFW’s traditional September/February schedule, Alexander Wang debuted ‘Collection 1’, on the roof of Pier 17 on Sunday. This is Wang’s first collection under his new June/December business model.
According to WWD, Wang left a note on each guest’s seat explaining that the show marked “a new beginning, a new identity and a new day for my brand,” while also reminding those who attended that he’s still showing in New York, which was perhaps a slight at other American designers, who’ve abandoned the New York schedule for Paris. The first show from Wang’s new era showcased his own interpretation of “Immigrant Americana,” a play on his own personal migration story, that combined Axl Rose-style bandanas with Chinatown details and Harley Davidson culture interspersed with models in bold “Old Glory”-inspired face paint.
