You Won’t Believe How Tom Holland Found Out He Was Spider-Man

No millennial is going to deny the fact that Instagram is one of the main platforms they visit to get news, whether it’s about a friend’s new relationship, a celebrity’s new hair, models on vacation—you get the idea. However, for some people, like Tom Holland, it’s also the place to find out how a casting audition went down.

The young English actor has been busy promoting summer’s most-anticipated Spider-man: Homecoming, in which he stars next to Robert Downey Jr., Zendaya, Laura Harrier and more. While he made headlines with his very impressive Lip Sync Battle of Rihanna’s “Umbrella,” the 20-year-old got the Internet buzzing again when he appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres show on May 9. When asked how he found out that he got the coveted role, Holland chuckled before recalling the event. “I basically had been auditioning for about five months and after my final audition they said, ‘You’ll find out tomorrow.’" Holland continues, “Fast forward six weeks, I was still waiting, still waiting, and one day Marvel just posted on their Instagram, go to our website to find out who the new Spider-Man is. And that’s it. I just found out online. They didn’t call me up or anything.” Talk about getting with the times. Guess phone calls are too old school?

In case you’re wondering, this is the Instagram post the comic giant shared back in 2015:

The Spider-man: Homecoming actor detailed what went down after seeing the news via the social media app. “I ran downstairs—I was going ballistic, my poor dog Tessa was terrified.... My brother Harry, who is pretty savvy with technology was like, ‘Dude, they’ve probably been hacked, bro. Like, they would call you, right? They would let you know?'" The whole situation was confusing, so it was a legit concern he had. But judging from the fact that the Marvel reboot is coming to theatres on July 7, and he did make a cameo appearance in Captain America: Civil War, things worked out in the end.

Watch the clip below to find out what happened when he did eventually get the official phone call from his agent.
