At last night’s VH1 Hip Hop Honours, Missy Elliott paid tribute to Missy Elliott. (Because, like, no one can pay tribute to Missy Elliott but Missy Elliott.)
Before moving forward with solving the Queen’s comeback mystery (cc: headline), please watch the video below. It shows Missy “Misdemeanour” opening the VH1 ceremony—which celebrated hip hop greats of the 90s era—with a performance of her 1999 song “She’s a Bitch.” Enjoy.
If that mind-blowing performance doesn’t prove that Missy is just as cutting edge and relevant in 2017 as she was in 2002, IDK what will. That makeup! That mic! Those moves! Missy is, and always has been, a boundary-breaking visionary. For those doubting that her long awaited return is upon us, here are five reasons to believe Missy’s comeback season has arrived.
In 2015, Missy teamed up with Pharrell to give us “WTF (Where They From).” In 2016, we got another Missy track: “Pep Rally.” In 2017, she gifted the world with radio-hit “I’m Better,” and later teamed up with Eve, Lil Kim & Trina for an official remix of the song.
Her last album, Respect M.E, came out all the way back in 2006. Which means we’ve been ready for another for about ten years. Around the time “WTF” dropped, Billboard asked Missy about a new album. To which she responded: “I want to say 2016 but I don’t want to give a time. Nowadays you say a time, they’ll stone you.” We won’t stone you, but we are anxiously waiting.
She headlined L.A.‘s FYF festival back in July, and all your favourite celebs were there for it. Beyonce’s ready for more Missy, and so are we.
There is nobody more humble (or better at emoji use) on Instagram / Twitter. I have so much respect for people who write 250 word plus captions for their photos, and who find a way to add a ? to every sentence. Missy, you are ? ? ? ? ? ? .
Here’s the preview. Can we get a release date please?
