J Brand Announces Inclusive Sizing in Spring Denim Range

Hallelujah.

J Brand is kicking off 2020 on an excellent note, with news that the American brand is expanding the sizing in its denim range to be more inclusive.

According to WWD, the spring line includes six new styles in sizes 33 to 38. Included in the new cuts is a high-rise skinny jean (the Maria), a high-rise cropped skinny (the Alana), an ultra-high-waisted skinny (the Natasha) and a high-rise cropped cigarette jean (the Ruby). The cuts are available in a variety of finishes, too, including acid grey wash, a range of indigo hues, a classic blue and a washed-out black.

The site notes that the new sizes are not simply a reworking of the existing patterns, but rather were created “from scratch.” Angela Cravens Chander, the director of marketing at the label, told the site, “It was done very mindfully. We didn’t want to just expand the size range. We really wanted to remake the pattern. We worked on women’s bodies to identify the best possible fit. It takes time to get it right, and we wanted to make sure we have a supreme fit before sharing it with the world.”

This fit process included hiring eight to ten different women on whom to extensively test the jeans, with the design team paying particular attention to the perpetual gaping problem. “Our team of technical designers and product developers focused on the pitch (the height at which the front rise sits in proportion to the back rise), increasing rises and back heights to have more coverage, without compromising the gap in the back and staying true to our J Brand fit,” Kristin Defino, the VP of merchandising for J Brand explained. On the J Brand Jeans website, the brand writes, “We believe in feeling great in your jeans is a privilege all should share, not only some. This is about body empowerment, not modification. Including, not excluding.”

It is expected that the brand will release new styles in the inclusive size range as the seasons go on. Stay tuned.
