RBMA Montreal: Street Style from Canada’s Coolest Young Music Makers

Montreal is a city where fashion, art, design, and music seam to seamlessly intersect. It’s the kind of place you visit and ask yourself, “how did everyone here get so cool?” … and then you throw on a vintage t-shirt, toss a swagger into your step, and hope everyone assumes you’re local.

This past weekend, Canada’s most dynamic young musical talent descended onto Quebec’s capital of cool to participate in Red Bull Music Academy’s ‘Bass Camp.‘ With diverse backgrounds ranging from EDM, hip hop, experimental Jazz and R&B, the selection of hand-picked producers, vocalists and beat makers all brought something unique to the program, with their sounds and their style. Because where there’s a hard hitting beat, there’s likely to be a street-style superstar posted up nearby, right?

Here’s a roundup of the Academy weekender’s best looks, and the talented people who wore them.

EVY JANE
A traveler who studied jazz and classical singing while dabbling in production software, Evelyn tested the waters in musicals and bands bringing her to Vancouver where she started Evy Jane.

KILMANJARO
As a songwriter and producer in the eccentric electronic art project Kilmanjaro, Kaan Gunesberk typically draws influence from early UK dub-step and jungle to combine jarring drum beats with distant melancholic vocals. Kaan has also contributed to tracks for Drake, Frank Ocean, Post Malone, Zayn Malik, Amine, Lorde, & Camila Cabello.

The best way for Gene Tellem to learn was through organizing and dissection. Learning from different worlds, and finding answers in strange places is explored through her unique Dance/House sounds.

At only 20 years old, the Toronto-based producer is already performing alongside the likes of Kaytranada, Pomo, Sango, Diplo, Boi 1da, Bondax, Monte Booker, Sean Leon and more, Shagabond continues to move crowds with his original production and eclectic sources of influence.

After long cello studies in a French conservatory, then harp and piano studies, she starts integrating electronic music in her common practice. Producer of downtempo dance tracks, fluid harmonies, R&B infused ambient techno, her multi-instrumental talents steered her towards electronic music for its unlimited possibilities and unique collaborations.

Formed in 2014, Lida Pawliuk and Ashlee Luk, the duo focus on hardware production and performance, known drum heavy and acid tinged live sets.

Cat Lamoureux crafts haunting, often delicate multi-layered soundscapes that are punctuated with abrasive stabs of percussion, tense builds and deconstructed elements of club music. Concerned with the unspoken, connectedness, power, and trauma, the Montreal native aims to challenge structures and institutions that perpetuate oppressive models of production and consumption.

Versatile singer and rapper that bridges the worlds of rap and hip-hop-infused pop to create a lively mix that echoes the sounds of artists like Drake, Frank Ocean, and Kid Cudi.
