How Many Mamma Mia Movies Should They Make?
The limit does not exist.
Sequinned bellbottoms, a star-studded cast and the entire catalogue of ABBA songs at its disposal. For some of us, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again is the perfect mid-July, popcorn movie experience. We’ll sing and dance in our theatre seats — and then sob when Meryl Streep reappears from the afterlife to perform a moving (albeit a little creepy) duet with her on-screen daughter, Amanda Seyfried.
Then, there’s the overly pretentious film critics who refuse to feel joy. Like Peter Travers, the grey-haired writer at Rolling Stone, who in his review of the film went so far as to compare the Mamma Mia fandom to the blind supports of the American president: “Like Trump voters,” he wrote, “fans of this jukebox-musical franchise see only the good in it, despite irrefutable evidence to the contrary.” Harsh.
To Travers — and those like him — I recommend taking a look at The Onion‘s review of Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again. In an extremely pointed roasting of the musical naysayer, the satire news site describes Mamma Mia 2 as “a film you can either choose to enjoy for the perfectly fine piece of entertainment that it is, or live out the rest of your existence as a miserable kill-joy, who slogs through life recoiling at anything remotely joyful or upbeat in the world. Your choice.”
For those of us in the former group, there’s never enough Mamma Mia. The sequel premiered on Friday, and already the Internet is campaigning for more movies. Could it be the Fast and Furious franchise of musicals? Does the Mamma Mia universe have the same 40-year expansion potential as Star Wars? As Lord of the Rings? Let’s take a look.
