Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux Reportedly Split Because They Wanted to Live in Different Cities

Aniston wanted to be in Los Angeles; Theroux wanted to be in New York.

In a very Chris Martin and Gwyneth Palrow-esque uncoupling statement, Jennifer Aniston Justin Theroux announced their split. The breakup happened at the end of last year, but the pair remain “two best friends who have decided to part ways as a couple but look forward to continuing our cherished friendship.” Theroux and Aniston didn’t disclose exactly why the seven year relationship ended — which, fair enough, celebs are allowed to keep some parts of their lives private — but ET is now reporting that it was partly because they wanted to live in cities on the opposite sides of America.

A source told ET that Theroux considers himself a New Yorker, having lived on the East Coast for 14 years before meeting Aniston. Even after settling down with the Friends star and making the move to Hollywood, he kept a Greenwich Village pad in the city. Living in L.A. was never something he necessarily wanted.

“He much prefers being [in New York] and that’s been a major issue for them for a long time,” the source said. “Justin has a very diverse friend group, and he likes that they’re not all ‘in the industry.’ He’s friends with people in the restaurant world, writers, comedians, artists, tattoo artists. It’s an eclectic group and he doesn’t have that type of network in L.A.”

Despite starting her career in New York, Jennifer Aniston has always been a California girl. When she visited New York, the source says she stayed in luxury hotels rather than in her husband’s apartment. This constant disagreement over where to live drew a 4,500 km wedge between the couple. The source, however, assures that it was a happy relationship while it lasted: “They really were a great couple. And they cared a lot about each other. Justin was always really protective of her. They both wanted this to work.”

We shouldn’t believe everything we hear from exclusive tabloid sources, but that last part at least sounds true. Aniston released her own statement via a publicist, who told Associated Press the couple insist they still care very much about each other and will remain friends:

“Normally we would do this privately, but given that the gossip industry cannot resist an opportunity to speculate and invent, we wanted to convey the truth directly. Whatever else is printed about us that is not directly from us, is someone else’s fictional narrative. Above all, we are determined to maintain the deep respect and love that we have for one another.”
