Getaway: A spa weekend at The Wauwinet, Nantucket

Now, knowing my husband and I—city types if there ever were a pair of grumpy people who met at 1:30 a.m. at a dirty after-hours club—you probably would never guess that the charming, low-key island of Nantucket (the less-flashy sister to nearby Martha’s Vineyard) would be the first place we’d honeymoon. But we put on our best seafaring New England, old-money, preppy faces and had a lovely old Americana time. We checked into The Wauwinet (wauwinet.com), a famous seaside retreat nine miles out of town, and well, other than port and cheese in the library at five, there isn’t much to do, so off to the spa I went. The charming wee Spa by the Sea, housed in what used to be a cottage, is all wood and white, seashells are a recurring theme and the only sounds, other than crickets and the lap lap of the Atlantic Ocean, is the screen door swinging in the breeze. The rooms are dubbed  “Sun, Sea, Sky, Sand,” and the treatments ride the wave, as it were, of the sea theme. Get swathed in a detoxifying seaweed wrap for the Atlantic Seaweed Body Wrap (US$210), rubbed down vigorously with a blend of aromatic sea salts, minerals salts and essential oils with Nantucket’s Salt and Sea Scrub (US$155) or, if you’re not in the mood to gaze at the island’s lavender fields, go for the Lavender Crush treatment (US$155), which uses wild lavender in an aromatic full body exfoliation and massage.
