TIFF is in town and it’s one of my favourite times of the year in Toronto. Normally I am stalking the red carpets not walking them with celebs, but if were to walk a red carpet I would definitely go with dramatic makeup.
Normally smoky eyes and a bold lip don’t go to together but I think in order to stand out on the red carpet you need to go heavier with the makeup in general.
For this look I did a smoky eye with purple and burgundy – yes burgundy! But I made sure do to a strong black liner so I didn’t look like a vampire. Bronzer to contour the cheeks plus a pop of bright colour on the cheeks will make sure the cheek bones stand out in photos. Lastly a bright dramatic lip completes the look.

If I were attending TIFF sometime this week, my hang-out area of choice would be at a glamourous celeb after-party of sorts. I’d be basking in the light of the stars, which would require a look that is elegant yet fun.
For the makeup, I went for a medium brown in the crease and outer “v” of the eye and then patted a bit of a shimmery bronze shadow on the centre of the lid and tear duct to add dimension and a little glitz. Powder foundation is typically more photo friendly, so I swept Laura Mercier’s Loose Mineral Powder all over the face for a matte look. Last but not least, I applied a deep plum gloss from MAC in “Richly Revered.” For the hair, I think a simple side pony will suffice to keep the emphasis on the face.

Every red carpet event requires drama; however, do aim for refined drama in order to stand out in stunning and classy way. Pick one area to really shine whether it’s your hair, gown, make-up or your arm candy!
TIFF is one perfect example of a parade of one glamorous evening gown after another. To avoid looking too costume-y, opt for understated elegance with your hair or make-up. Top buns and French braids may be trending this season but if there’s anything that’s always been a red carpet classic is straight hair. Just look at Gwyneth Paltrow, Reese Witherspoon, Angelina Jolie and of course, Jennifer Aniston!
Create volume by applying dry shampoo in short bursts while blow-drying. Brush the hair smooth, part naturally and finish with an extra hold hair spray to keep the smoothness and the shape all night! Not only that this look does not take hours to accomplish, it gives you plenty of time to rub shoulders with celebrities while looking effortlessly chic all evening long!

Although I live far from Toronto, if I was attending TIFF (or any red carpet for that matter), there is no doubt in my mind I would go with a smoky look with voluminous curled hair. It’s all about glam!
For this look I went with the Make Up For Ever Technicolor palette (hello, this palette is all about film!), which is limited edition, but the colours I used are all available in the regular MUFE line. I turned up the smoulder factor with the brown, black, and cream, and then added some coats of mascara for major lashes, and a nude lip for the ultimate red carpet look. For the hair, I curled it using a clipless one-inch curling iron for a romantic look.

When the hypothetical question of what makeup would you wear for an after party at TIFF, I thought to myself, what would Freida Pinto do? I’m a big fan of simplicity and only highlighting your best features and she, in my opinion, does it best. Her look is rarely made up but she still stands out. I tried to do the same; tried to keep the look soft, romantic, but still enough to be red carpet worthy.
For a clear, photogenic base, I used Make Up For Ever HD Foundation, which is one of the most camera friendly foundations. I contoured with theBalm Bahama Mama and highlighted with Benefit Girl Meets Pearl. And of course, I tapped a light hand of M.A.C Pinch Me blush. The eyes, which set the tone for the entire look are soft and romantic. I used Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream in “16 Pink Beige” as an all over base and lightly smoked it out with the “taupe” shade from Annabelle’s Eyeshadow Quad in Pink A Boo. I lined the lower lashline with M.A.C Smolder Kohl and used two coats of Make Up For Ever Smoky Extravagant Mascara to finish it off. For the perfect pink gloss, I used Nars Dolce Vita Gloss.
