Ultra-fresh and luminous skin has been on our beauty trend radar for months. And, unless you are blessed by skin gods, makeup often plays a pretty significant role in achieving a sought-after healthy complexion. However, we can’t rely on makeup alone because we all know a good skin care regimen is the key to a healthy glow. While a morning facial cleanse is obviously an important part of a beauty regimen, a good nighttime skin care routine can help take the guesswork out of achieving bright skin in the a.m. Without the proper pre-slumber skin care routine, you can end up battling nightmares like breakouts, dark circles and puffy eyes—yikes!

But whether you are using natural oils to defend against breakouts like Laurelle Alexandra of Paint Me Pretty or opting for a serum over a moisturizer like Maggie Ng of Beauty PHD, future you will be grateful for that TLC at the end of each and every day. A foolproof nighttime routine, paired with a good morning practice will do wonders when it comes to your quest for perfect skin.

As a beauty blogger, I’ve been pretty fortunate to have the opportunity to try many different products, so the “brands” of skincare I use tend to always change up every few weeks or so. But the routine itself is more or less the same. If I’ve worn any makeup, then it’s extremely important that I remove all traces of it before going to bed, as it can clog pores and cause breakouts. So I’ll start off with a good makeup remover, preferably one that won’t dry out my skin and delicate eye area. I also like to exfoliate my face two to three times a week with a gentle facial mask or scrub to help get rid of dead skin cells and buildup.

Then comes my cleanser, which is usually pretty gentle as well. I often forget to do this, but I’ll sometimes use a spray-on toner when my skin needs extra hydration. Because I’m a lazy (I mean ‘busy’) person, I actually skip the moisturizer and just go straight to a facial serum. The one I’m currently using also helps with brightening and pigmentation. And if I remember, I’ll apply an eye gel product under my eyes to help combat the dark circles and puffiness.

My body also unfortunately has a few eczema patches on which I use an organic eczema balm to help with the inflammation and itchiness. So there you have it folks, my nightly skin care routine!

Your nighttime skin care routine is an important part of making sure your skin is glowing and healthy, so I take it very seriously. Having suffered from acne as a teenager, I like to treat my skin with TLC to ensure I keep it clear and hydrated.

I start with a double cleanse using Dermalogica’s Pre-cleanse, which is an oil-based cleanser that is absolutely to die for. It helps remove any makeup, dirt and bacteria, leaving my skin soft and supple. I then use One Love Organics’ Easy Does It Cleanser as my second cleanse to ensure I’ve removed all traces of makeup. I follow up with Dermalogica’s Daily Microfoliant, which is a gentle cleanser that you can use on a daily basis. It literally leaves my skin glowing.

After the cleansing and exfoliating, I spritz my face with Lush’s Tea Tree Water, which helps keep my skin clear of acne with its antibacterial properties. If I have any spots that need some extra care, I dab pure tea oil on the problem areas. I then follow with an oil based moisturizer from One Love Organics’ Skin Savior, and let me tell you, it stays true to its name.

I know it might sound weird that I use two oil-based products on my acne prone skin, but putting oil back into your skin actually prevents your body from creating more oil, which then helps you maintain fewer breakouts.

To finish off my nighttime skin routine, I use Dermalogica’s Multivitamin Power Firm around my eyes and outer lining of my lips, followed by my favorite lip balm of all time from Epic Blend.

I know skin care routines in the evening can be frustrating because you are tired and eager for bed, but it really is the most important time to treat your skin. Going to bed with fresh, clean skin will ensure that you wake up with beautiful, soft, glowing skin that’s ready for the day.
