Beauty moments of the week: Kim’s surprisingly normal beauty routine, Taylor’s new look + more
A lot can happen in seven days. That’s why every Friday, we’re going to take time to look at three beauty moments we had feeling about that week, and discuss them accordingly.
1. Kim Kardashian gave us insight into her beauty routine February 24th was truly a joyous day. It was when Kim Kardashian bestowed upon us — and Into the Gloss — the knowledge of exactly what beauty products she uses. The surprise? They’re actually pretty affordable, especially the Neutrogena makeup remover wipes, which some of us (hello!) have been using for many moons. Because stars: they’re just like me. “I have so many friends who don’t wear makeup and hardly ever do their hair,” she told Into the Gloss. “I feel really blessed because I genuinely love the process of getting my hair and makeup done. Even beyond that, I just love to take care of my skin.” So what’s in her bag? Kim K is a fan of everything from By Terry Purete de Rose Cleansing Gel ($52) to Guerlain Orchidee Imperiale The Rich Cream to Natura Basse’s C+C Vitamine Cream, which she’s into because it smells like oranges. (I hear you, girl.) She also gave a shout-out to Armani Luminous Silk Foundation, Joe Blasco Ultrabase Foundation (because she took a makeup class there back in the nineties), and a $795 LED light therapy machine called Quasar MD Plus, that she uses for her psoriasis. Amazing. All of it. (And attainable too!) Even though, for the record, I’d like to say that out of all of Kim Kardashian’s friends, I am absolutely the one who does her hair the most.
2. Zendaya defended her dreads following E! Fashion Police segment If you’ve avoided all Oscars talk since Sunday’s broadcast, congratulations. But odds are, you won’t be surprised to learn that during E! Fashion Police’s Academy Awards wrap-up, host Giuliana Rancic said actress Zendaya’s dreadlocks looked like they smelled patchouli and weed. (Giuliana, why?) In turn, Zendaya took to Instagram to defend herself and to call out Rancic’s racist remarks, which Rancic has since apologized for. “I want to say to Zendaya, and anyone else out there that I have hurt, that I am so, so sincerely sorry,” she said on-air. “This really has been a learning experience for me. I’ve learned a lot today, and this incident has taught me to be a lot more aware of cliches and stereotypes, how much damage they can do — and that I am responsible, as we all are, to not perpetuate them further.” And she’s right. Especially since, as Zendaya pointed out, she wore dreadlocks to the Oscars to “showcase them in a positive light” and “to remind people of colour that our hair is good enough.” Suffice to say, E! and Giuliana Rancic (hopefully) now know so, too.
3. Taylor Swift slicked her hair back at the ELLE Style Awards
I’ve waited my whole life to say it, but as of this week’s ELLE Style Awards, Taylor Swift had that long-haired, slicked back white t-shirt. (Provided “white t-shirt” now also means “Julien Macdonald gown” — which today, it does.)
But I digress! Parting from her usual look of a standard bob and/or early nineties sitcom hair (not that there’s anything wrong with that), Swift borrowed a page from the Fall 2015 runways via a sleek, wet-looking style with a dramatic side part.
And it looked fantastic. Considering Swift’s music has been evolving and/or growing up over the last two years, it’s glorious when a 25-year-old pop star channels a look we’ll be seeing a lot of next season. (You hear that, people? With this vibe, she’s ahead of the curve.) It’s also proof that you can carry the wet look off yourself without looking excessively greasy and/or like me during the summer. Just keep the gel to a minimum, and then bask in the glow of being someone who made “This Sick Beat” a registered trademark. Haters gonna hate, you guys.
