We spoke to eyebrow queen Anastasia Soare about Instagram’s arch obsession and of course, Cara Delevingne

A few weeks ago, I was standing in front of my bathroom mirror and found myself horrified---eyes wide, brow furrowed because of, well…my brows. I had just finished cleansing, moisturizing---there are a million more steps but I’ll spare you---and I couldn’t believe how awful my bare eyebrows looked without the help of a pencil, tinted gel or pomade (the furrowing probably didn’t help). They hadn’t technically changed; they were the same brows I used to present to the world before I started filling them in about two years ago. The hairs were still long, dark and kind of sparse (ugh) and the scar on the left one was still there, making it look, as always, shorter than the right. They just looked so wimpy and lifeless in their natural state, sans makeup. It didn’t take me long to realize that it wasn’t that my eyebrows were getting thinner, it was that society’s expectations of my eyebrows had gotten out of control. Well, not my eyebrows specifically (I hope), but eyebrows in general. I reached out to Anastasia Soare, celebrity brow expert, founder of everyone’s go-to brow brand Anastasia Beverly Hills, and overall arch queen to find out when this takeover took place and how we should all feel about it. “Eyebrows are everything! They are the starting point of beauty because they [...] add balance and proportion to the face,” explained Soare. “The human eye uses the eyebrow as an anchor point for the rest of the face. This is why a woman can look truly stunning without any makeup but perfectly shaped, full eyebrows.” In fact, did you know that you can change the shape of your entire face by changing your arches?

“I don’t think thin brows will make a comeback; women have finally seen how much more beautiful their look can be with a properly shaped eyebrow.” And as for Cara Delevingne, Soare believes she’s “certainly brought attention to the eyebrows. With beautiful brows like that, how do you not admire them and try to create them for yourself?"

Unsurprisingly, she credits much of our obsession to social media. When was the last time you scrolled through Instagram and didn’t see dozens of full brows staring back at you? Or read a beauty article that didn’t mention the importance of a strong brow? Was there such a time? It’s hard to recall. “Instagram is a 24-hour online magazine,” says Soare. “You can see everything you like non-stop, and it has certainly had an effect on the makeup industry.”

Since it seems that your Instagram feed won’t be free of brow memes or how-tos anytime soon, we suggest you get yourself some good brow products and start filling, with the help of our simple guide. Do it for the ‘gram.
