A lesson in multitasking from Karlie Kloss
The motivational meme “You have the same amount of hours in a day as Beyoncé” should be updated to include Karlie Kloss; between walking and posing for labels like DVF and Joe Fresh, she bakes Kookies and updates her YouTube channel, Klossy. This fall, she really maxed out her to-do list by enrolling at New York University, with the help of a recommendation letter written by her modelling mentor Christy Turlington. Juggling homework and “work work” isn’t new for Kloss—she’s been at it since she was 15.
“For the first four years of my career, I was in high school in St. Louis,” she says during a recent trip to Toronto. “I would fly multiple times a week between New York and St. Louis, to Europe, back and forth.” Now that she’s 23, the L’Oréal Paris spokesmodel, who grew up with backstage mothers, such as hairstylist Odile Gilbert, doesn’t require a roster of chaperones. “It was like, ‘OK, Karlie, who’s with you? Your mom, your uncle, your sister, your dad, your teacher?’ It was the running joke,” she says.
It seems like Kloss rarely hits the snooze button, but she does take a rest every now and then, and when she does, it’s usually for a holiday at home. “On Thanksgiving morning, [my mom] makes this pumpkin bread. It’s so good. When it’s in the oven, the smell floods the house. I don’t know what spices she uses in it, but it’s very distinct. I wish I could make a candle out of it.” And Kloss probably will.
