Former Model Madison Schill Wanted Sun-Kissed Hair With Maximum Shine. Here’s How She Got It.

Former model Madison Schill’s hair used to be coloured dark for gigs. Now, she’s colouring it on her own terms.

Madison’s challenge: “I want to subtly lighten my hair so it looks natural, shiny and healthy.”

Hero product: L’Oréal Paris Superior Preference

Her beauty diary: When Madison was a globe-trotting model, her hair was regularly coloured to suit the requirements of the job. “Agents would always say my hair was too mousy or boring,” she says of her natural soft-brown locks. “They wanted it to be more edgy, so they’d colour it either black or super-dark brown.” Madison retired from modelling in 2013 and until recently hadn’t coloured her hair. “I just felt like I wanted to reacquaint myself with my own hair colour,” she explains. But she was ready for a change—this time on her own terms. “I wanted my hair to look naturally sun-kissed, and I wanted it to match my skin tone,” she says, adding that this was why she chose Superior Preference Shade 36 (“Golden Brown”). “My hair colour has depth, and it looks and feels healthier than it did before I coloured it.”

“Deciding to colour my hair only took 15 minutes because, for the first time, I didn’t have to ask for permission.”

Pro tip: Use the Care Suprême Colour-Saving Conditioner, which comes in the box, to hydrate, revitalize and lock in colour. (It contains golden camelina oil, antioxidant vitamin E and UV filters.)

L’Oréal Paris Superior Preference

There’s a reason L’Oréal Paris Superior Preference is the number one hair colour product in the country. The fade-defying translucent liquid-gel formula creates natural-looking highlights and lowlights that last up to eight weeks. It comes in 50 shades, so there’s a colour for everyone. ($14)

How to achieve the perfect golden hue:

“Stay within the range of your current colour and play with undertones,” suggests Brennen Demelo, L’Oréal Paris Canadian hair artist and expert. “This way, you create a more natural lightness. Madison, for example, only went two shades lighter and added a golden undertone.”
