Show Your True Colours With Rainbow Fashion Statements for Spring 2018

With looks like these, we'll never be over the rainbow.

“My final collection here at Burberry is dedicated to—and in support of—some of the best and brightest organizations supporting LGBTQ+ youth around the world,” said Burberry’s chief creative officer, Christopher Bailey, in an official press release. Considering the current social and political climate, the colour dominating the runways seems necessary. Yes, the last decade has seen some victories with same-sex marriage and the development of workplace discrimination laws to protect members of the LGBTQ+ community, but that doesn’t mean we can shirk the work to come. LGBTQ+ youth are still 14 times more likely than their peers to suffer from suicidal thoughts or substance abuse and trans people continue to fight to use the restroom aligning with their gender identity.

While some designers have allowed a bleak outlook to hang over their runways like a dark cloud, houses like Thom Browne, Maison Martin Margiela and Dolce & Gabbana have joined Burberry in looking for a bright side. Rather than spring’s usual parade of pastels, Carolina Herrera and Oscar de la Renta sent colourful, Pollock-esque paint splatters down their Spring 2018 runways while Missoni and Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini went classic with multi-coloured, stripe-emblazoned gowns.

We know you can’t have a rainbow without a little rain, but rather than dwelling on the dark and dreary, stylist and contributing editor George Antonopoulos chased the rainbow for our March 2018 issue. “I had’t done an upbeat story like this in a while, but when we first had the meeting for the Rainbow photoshoot, I immediately knew how I wanted the editorial to look: Full of energy, playfulness and happiness! The whole team was extra happy that day and everyone was having a blast with so much colour on set. It made a cold day feel like spring!”
