Meghan Markle Wears Canadian for Invictus Games Opening Ceremonies in Toronto
Even though Meghan Markle is American, she’s an honourary Canadian in our eyes. After all, the 36-year-old actress calls Toronto home as she films the hit legal drama Suits there.
So it came as no surprise when Meghan donned two Canadian labels to the Invictus Games Opening Ceremonies in Toronto on Saturday while supporting her boyfriend, Prince Harry, who founded the games in 2014.
For the ceremonies, Markle wore a burgundy Wilfred “Beaune” dress made of chiffon, which featured a flattering wrap silhouette and delicate pleats. It retails for $185 at Aritzia, but the colour she wore, “Truffle,” is currently sold out in all sizes except XXS (looks like the “royal effect” is hitting Meghan already). She paired the dress with a matching leather jacket by Mackage — the “Baya” style in Bordeaux ($858) — thrown over her shoulders and a burgundy velvet clutch. It, too, is pretty much sold out, save for one size small on Shopbop.com. Both Wilfred and Mackage are brands the philanthropist has worn before.
And while we didn’t get the Meghan and Prince Harry photo opp we had hoped for (the 33-year-old royal was seated in the VIP box with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, his wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, and U.S. First Lady Melania Trump, while his girlfriend was sitting with Markus Anderson, a close friend said to have introduced her to the prince), this did mark the first official appearance of the Suits star supporting her beau.
“She appears at the Invictus Games opening ceremonies because she knows how much the Games mean to her boyfriend, and yet they didn’t want to sit her next to him because they knew that would overshadow the opening ceremonies,” Chris Ship, Royal Editor for ITV News in the U.K., told the Canadian Press. “So the choreography has actually been very clever.”
So will the couple be making an official public appearance together any time soon? Only time will tell, but you can bet we’ll be watching!
