The Beauty Trend WeWoreWhat’s Danielle Bernstein Can’t Wait to Try

WeWoreWhat‘s Danielle Bernstein may be a fashion blogger, but that doesn’t mean beauty isn’t a big part of her life. Though she does often hide her face in her Instagram photos (“Too often, fashion becomes about the model—and I’m not a model. I don’t even like wearing makeup. What I do like are clothes, and that’s where I want my readers to focus,” she wrote on her blog), she’s still a 25-year-old woman who loves M.A.C lipsticks, Ouai haircare and Le Labo perfume.

But the main focus of Bernstein’s beauty routine seems to be her skin — after all, her trademark sunnies only cover her eyes, leaving a lot of facial features still in the forefront. And while she does try a ton of different beauty products, there are a few constants that have stayed in her routine, like St. Ives Apricot Scrub.

According to Danielle, she’s been using the scrub since middle school, so it makes sense she would team up with the brand for their ‘Mix-It-Up’ speaker series, which puts the spotlight on today’s “movers and shakers” who “mix up their industries.” We got a chance to chat skincare, makeup and more with Danielle. Read below for our interview.

As a “fashion” girl, how big of a role does beauty play in your life?
Huge! Ive always been obsessed with makeup and skincare and keeping my skin young and healthy looking but I think I didn’t really know much about it until I started my blog and started working with brands. Then [I] got introduced to so many new things, tricks and tips, ways to keep my skin healthy and ways to do my makeup after working with so many makeup artists. I just recently have kind of found what works for me.

What is it that works for you?
I used to do really heavy eyeliner. Now I think I do a lighter wing and less eye makeup and just really focus on my skin and a nice lip colour. The reason I’m even working with St. Ives is I’ve been using their Apricot Scrub since I was in middle school so that’s really the one thing that’s stayed consistent in my skincare routine throughout this whole process. I’ve tried masks and moisturizers that really work for me, so now I kind of have a routine.

What is your current skincare routine?
I exfoliate at least three to four times a week with my Apricot Scrub, and then I have a bunch of skin moisturizers. I’m trying a new one from Fresh that I’m putting on at night. I do a lot of sheet masks, I get a ton of them in the mail so I’m always trying new things. And I exfoliate also in the shower. I just made a new [scrub] here at the St. Ives pop-up. It’s the volcanic sand with the avocado and honey. It smells delicious and it’s so nice on your skin, so I’ve been using it in the shower on my body.

Would you dabble in beauty blogging now that you know more about beauty?
I almost feel weird giving advice about beauty because I’m still learning myself, but I know what works for me and I’m definitely not shy with sharing that.

What is one trend that you would love to master?
I’ve never been able to do a bold, red lip. That is something that I really wanna try, I’ve just been too scared to do it. I think Paris Fashion Week may be the perfect place to try it, so you’ll have to wait [and see]!

What was the first beauty product you ever bought?
It must have been a M.A.C lipstick, a light pink. Or maybe it was the concealer. Or it was probably that yellow CoverGirl mascara that I always use, they don’t even sell it anymore, I have to find it on Amazon sometimes.

What was the last beauty product you bought?
I just got a huge package of M.A.C lipsticks today, the whole nude collection, so I’m really excited about those. And I buy a lot of fragrance.

What are some fragrances you love right now?
Le Labo Noir 29 is my go-to scent. I also love Viktor and Rolf Flowerbomb and all the Margiela scents are my favourite. My boyfriend likes a certain scent, my fans like another, and I do actually switch it up depending if I’m going out or if it’s a daytime thing, I have different scents for different moods.

What are some must-have hair products for you?
As a blonde, I always use purple shampoo. I use O&M hair products a lot because it’s organic and it’s really good and they make a specific purple shampoo that’s good for blondes. And I use Olaplex treatments whenever my hair feels dry. I get a ton of new stuff all the time from brands, so I’m constantly trying new things. but those are the most consistent.

I use all the Ouai products — their Wave Spray, their Dry Shampoo, their Smooth Spray. I always use a heat protectant spray as a detangler when I first get out of the shower because it helps you to brush your hair out also. And I always use a wet brush because I think it’s nicer on your hair and helps you get the knots out.

Who would you consider your beauty icon?
That’s such a tough one. I don’t know, I’ll have to get back to you on that!

Let’s switch over to your success as a blogger. You obviously have a huge social media following; how do you separate your public life from your personal life?
There’s a fine line between it. I have a new boyfriend so everyone is asking me about him and trying to find out who he is. He’s not really into being shown on social media so I’ve tried to be respectful of that. But at the same time, the reason people try to follow me is they feel like they really know me and can relate to me, so I like to keep them in the loop and really stay true to how I’ve created this brand. I talk to them and share a lot. When my grandpa passed away earlier this summer, I was sharing a lot more than I probably usually would. But it’s almost because I feel this responsibility to my followers to be open and genuine with them. I like to be as consistent as possible, without crossing the line, of course.

Where do you draw that line?
I think once I go out and have a few drinks, I turn off social media. Certain things that are meant to be sacred will remain that way.

What is the advice you’d give to bloggers starting out on how to stay relevant?
It’s all about being innovative, which is the whole point of the event we’re doing tonight. I started creating video content and I have two brands and I’m investing in tech apps. I’m really just trying to get my hands in a million different things, but all things that I can give enough attention to for them to be successful. I’ve always worn a million hats and I think it works for me, but it might not work for everyone. If it doesn’t work for [you], focusing on what you do best and keeping consistency with [your blog] is really important.
