Google Pixel’s Night Sight Camera Lets Users See in the Dark
Every time I hand my Google Pixel 3 over to an iPhone user, they do the same thing: open the camera, snap a photo, and say something along the lines of, “wow, the camera really is that good.” There a lot of things I’ve learned to love about my Google phone since switching over six months ago (the weight, the limitless storage, the speedy charging), and a few things I’ve struggled to accept (the loss of iMessage, the inability to FaceTime, the terrible emojis). The Google Pixel camera alone has made the conversion worth it. It’s my unprofessional opinion, but it’s a sentiment that has been echoed by tech-enthusiasts across the web, who have concluded over and over that Google Pixel 3 is the best camera phone of all time.
And now, with Google Pixel’s camera software update, they’ve solidified their top spot. Night Sight is a new mode in the camera app, hidden in the the “more” section, that allows you to take bright, sharp, true-t0-life photos in low light, without the use of flash. The best way to describe it, is to show you.
Here’s how it works: “Night Sight constantly adapts to you and the environment, whether you’re holding Pixel or propping it on a steady surface,” explains Google Canada’s blog post. “Before you press the shutter button, Night Sight measures your natural hand shake, as well as how much motion is in the scene. If Pixel is stable and the scene is still, Night Sight will spend more time capturing light to minimize noise; if Pixel is moving or there’s significant scene motion, Night Sight will use shorter exposures, capturing less light to minimize motion blur.”
Perhaps the coolest thing about Night Sight is that it doesn’t discriminate against those who haven’t upgraded their device. Whether you’re using your OG Pixel 1, or have recently splurged on the all new Pixel 3, you’ll be able to update your camera app to take capture crispy, after dark pics with your phone.
