Built on Stilts Over the Andaman Sea, Panyee is Thailand’s Gravity-Defying Island

Panyee island is a 200-year-old Muslim fishing village built on stilts in Phang Nga Bay, about 7km from James Bond Island. Shaughnessy is photographed on the soccer pitch that floats alongside the village. The original floating wooden field was built in 1986 by a group of local boys who wanted to play rather than just watch soccer on TV.

At one point during our shoot, the ball went into the water and fashion editor, Eliza Grossman, dived in to retrieve it. “I was afraid that Shaughnessy was going to jump in there in her Etro dress so I had to go first,” laughs Grossman. Away from the field, you can walk through a maze of stalls where villagers sell souvenirs (everything from T-shirts to pearls) as well as the village’s famous shrimp paste.
