What’s in your bag, Dragonette’s Martina Sorbara?

On her go-to bag: “I have a couple. The thing is, I also carry a knitting bag with me, but I took it out because I was knitting at home.”

On what she else she is carrying: “A clutch, cheque book, Xanax (I have an MRI later on today). [A] cribbage board has been just been sitting in my purse for a long time. I like to play cribbage. There’s a hundo! There’s a face mask too!”

On where her makeup lives: “It travels. Generally, the black one. [The grey one] is for my cards and money.”

On her fave lipsticks: “I hate lipstick that tastes bad. It just tastes like pasty grossness. This [YSL lipstick] actually is really nice. Smell this! This one smells delightful, like peaches. It’s not even a very good colour on me but I like the way it tastes.”

On her latest lipstick obsession: “I just got given this Colourpop Lippie Stix and I love it. I’m wearing it. It never comes off, it’s matte, and it’s amazing. Someone in LA just gave it to me.I was like, “I’ll take those, but I’ll never use them.”

On her hat: “It’s my grandpa’s. What’s strange is that it fits me. In my memory, he had a ginormous head.”

On music: “I play guitar and piano. Live, I generally play a little guitar. The recorder’s just fun and hilarious to play along with pop songs on the radio. I’m fucking jamming on this thing 24/7. I have put it on a record. There’s a song on the second and the third. I sneak it in there.”

On her pen: “Muji—it was my birthday present. [I usually carry] a big stash of pens and a notepad. I doodle and draw a lot. I maybe write down a funny word or two that I’d like to keep in mind for songwriting. [When it comes to songwriting], it’s become more collaborative in the last little while. Often, I just sit down by myself and write a song. I’ve been doing a lot more sessions with other people, which is fun. Before, it was petrifying.”

On her sunglass case: “There aren’t any sunglasses in there. I lost the Ray Bans and now I use whatever’s in my car. I should have taken my other sunglasses from my car! They would have made [this] really good. They’re actually gold plated round ones from the ‘70s.”

On her iPod: “I generally just listen to really old music that I’ve always listened to. I can’t change anything that’s on the iPod because it’s stored with music from a computer. It’s unchangeable. It’s like a really long mix tape. It’s very nostalgic to me. But I like that I can’t add anything new. It’s got a whole style and era.”

On her Cabin Porn book: “I just bought it because I have a cabin…I saw it in the store yesterday. That’s why it’s here. [My cabin is in] Kinmount. It’s north east near Fenelon Falls, Minden, Haliburton. It’s on a river. It doesn’t look unlike this one. It’s actually my Mom’s. She stopped going there…so I kind of assumed a caretaker position.”

On her jacket: “That’s in case I need a wardrobe change. I don’t know. It might be vintage. I bought it at a consignment store at VSP. It’s Made in China; generally, that’s not vintage.”

On her latest vintage purchase: “I just bought this old coat that’s really enormous but I’m so excited to wear it in the winter. It’s from the Simpsons in the ‘80s but it was only $20 at Value Village. It’s like a whole duvet but without putting out a pazillion dollars (Editor’s note: apparently that’s between a million and a billion dollars). I love olive green. It’s like camouflage. I got the cuffs taken out and the whole thing cleaned. I’m going to get new cuffs put in. I just picked it up from the cleaner and I’m drowning in it.”
