Our Top 10 Fashion Moments from 2017

So long 2017!

Looking back, this year has been – how do I put this delicately? – an interesting one. Amid political, economic and cultural turmoil, the one bright spot we could always turn to was fashion. Award shows, street style and celeb OOTDs are not only a happy distraction, but a necessary focus. They push new trends into the limelight (seriously, how many pregnancy reveals did Queen Bey’s Instagram inspire?) and actually make the world feel like it’s moving forward (like finally say goodbye to the off-the-shoulder top) . Plus, who doesn’t love an internet-breaking red carpet moment or a Kardashian paparazzi-fuelled campaign (Yeezy, I’m looking at you)?

Here were the 10 fashion moments that gave us life in 2017.

With a changing of the guard at British Vogue, the fashion world waited with bated breath for that first cover by newly appointed editor-in-chief Edward Enninful. Adwoa Aboah in all her blue-eyeshadowed glory didn’t disappoint #NewVogue.

SAINT LAURENT! what a moment. i am forever grateful @anthonyvaccarello @pg_dmcasting

There was no denying the Spring 2018 runways were Kaia Gerber’s fashion coming-out party. The most memorable moment from all of fashion month was the strapless, sequinned velvet pouf dress at Saint Laurent. It was hard to know where to look, the Eiffel Tower, that dress or those supermodel stems.

Katy Perry may have fully embraced this year’s Met Gala theme (Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garcons for those that need a refresher) in a frothy scarlet Maison Margiela veil/jacket/dress, but Cara Delevingne shone brightest in a silver Chanel suit with matching silver scalp.

Peel your eyes away from that giant sparkler for just a second. With the news of her engagement to Prince Harry, Meghan Markle’s sartorial choices (as a princess-to-be no less) will be forever seared into our memories. That white coat by Canadian label Line made major waves, as will all of her fashion choices from here on out.

It’s Celine’s world and we’re just living in it. After a high fashion comeback, mostly thanks to the savvy styling of Law Roach (a.k.a. @luxurylaw) and a campy Vogue magazine shoot where she was decked out in head-to-toe couture, Dion is back on our radar as the fashion icon we always knew she could be.

Queen of everything. #GRAMMYs

No fashion round up would be complete without including Queen B. As the bringer of the world’s most epic (and meme’d about) pregnancy announcement and that unforgettable gold goddess Grammy’s dress, there’s just no one who brings it like Bey.

Ashley Graham has had quite the year. If an American Vogue cover, a book launch, a Barbie doll in her likeness and a tv show in the works weren’t enough, she also rocked red carpets and runways across the globe, while casually posing for many a Sports Illustrated spread.

Congrats to @rafsimons and @calvinklein on a cool show last night.

Millie Bobby Brown may have barely broken the teen barrier, but take one look at her Instagram feed (with a cool 10 million followers) filled with sweet selfies with designer-du-jour Raf Simons and you know this kid is going places.  Her white tulle Calvin Klein by Appointment dress at Emmys cemented her status as one to watch.

If there was one brand that epitomized 2017 style, it would be Gucci. Alessandro Michele’s singular grasp on fashion was inescapable. The instantly-recognizable loafers, bomber jackets and embroidered sweaters popped up everywhere, but most notably on Harry Styles who made the printed suits an on-stage signature.

No one embraced colour on the red carpet quite like RiRi in 2017. No shade was too bold, from egg yolk yellow and crimson red to dusty lavender and eye-popping magenta. Perhaps the prettiest was the pale millennial pink gown she wore to the Valerian premiere. The caption on this Insta may have read,”spam”, but we’re cool if she litters our feed with style inspo any day.
