With the return of Wet Hot American Summer and its exaggerated take on 1980s summer camp, we’ve been thinking about the good old days spent kicking back at summer camp, and the summer staples we once couldn’t go without.

Summer camp style was all about keeping cool in the hot hot heat, staying warm to roast marshmallows by the campfire, and allowing for a bathing suit to be layered underneath all of the above (to always be prepared for sudden food fights, of course!)

From baseball caps to Birkenstocks and denim cut-offs, our Style Panel reveals how they throw a modern twist on their favourite old school camp inspired looks.

My favourite camp inspired look is the baseball cap—it’s the epitome of laid back summer style. The leather brim of this one adds a fashion forward twist to an otherwise sporty piece. I’ve been pairing it with cut-offs and white T-shirts for long summer days spent running errands or hanging in the park. When evening comes, it’s the perfect contrast for floaty sundresses.

If you had asked me years ago if I would wear Birkenstock sandals, I probably would have laughed in your face. For the majority of my life I’ve associated these chunky sandals with people who are a little less style savvy. But look at me now! I probably wear them almost everyday. Like this look, I love to pair dressier items with my favourite laid back sandals.

Most of my favourite memories have occurred at the most magical place I’ve ever been to: camp. I was lucky enough to have spent a number of summers attending camps and as soon I was old enough I worked as a counsellor at both day and overnight camps. Camp fashion was all about comfort and less about trends. It was important that what you wore—kept you cool—and allowed for a bathing suit to be layered underneath (and would be okay if a water/food fight broke out).

I find that throughout the year, I’ll wear pieces that are still from my last summers working at Shalom Malibu, like my Roots sweats, woolies and Levi’s cutoffs were all classics from those summers that are still on regular rotation. For a camp inspired look, perfect for a lazy summer day in the city, I’ve paired those denim shorts with a flow-y off-the-shoulder top, ’70s sunglasses, and my favourite pair of clog sandals. And as I’ve always been a hoarder of memories, I still have my “BABS” choker that I wore religiously from ages 10-13, perfect to complete this outfit.

Barbara’s wearing: Shorts, Levi’s. Shirt, 1 State available at Hudson’s Bay. Clogs, Zara. Sunglasses, Raybans. Necklace, my childhood.

There is nothing better than the cut-off short. With the camping season in full swing, cut-offs provide relief from the heat and make a great fashion statement. I use every excuse to wear my distressed, high-waist cut-off shorts. I like to to pair them with a fun, vibrant crop top, a Canadian made handmade leather belt, and African print shoes. This look is perfect for a day of glamping and a quick trip into town for a latte.

Nothing says summer camp to me quite like denim cutoffs and a baseball cap. All you need is a few different tops and you have a week’s worth of outfits. Pop on a sweatshirt at night for campfire fun and you’re good to go!
