The Spice Girls Predicted Every Trend of 2018

The Spice Girls legacy reaches far beyond their musical achievements. In addition to their poignant calls to “spice up your life” and “zig-a-zig-ah,” the Spice Girls also left their mark on the fashion’s collective memory with their bold dizzyingly-high go-go boots, Union Jack dresses and leopard print duster coats. In fact, their sartorial choices have become borderline prophetic. Is it possible that the Spice Girls predicted every single trend of 2018?

1. Track Pants

Once reserved for lazy days at home (or, you know, actual athletic activities), the humble track pant has ascended to the status of the ultimate effortlessly cool fashion trend. ‘It’ girls like Kendall Jenner and Hailey Baldwin have been seen rocking track pants at every occasion they get, just like Mel C did in the 90s.

2. Head-to-toe Leather

From Sarah Paulson’s recent colourful and feminine Calvin Klein outfit to Lady Gaga’s unique Sonia Rykiel number, the head-to-toe leather look is still in full swing. Draw some inspiration our favourite girl group at the Europe MTV VMAs in 2000, but trade the skin-tight jumpsuits and bell-bottom trousers for patent mini-skirts or tube dresses.

3. Spaghetti Straps

This ‘90s staple top — everyone’s favourite before the turn of the century– is creeping its way back into our wardrobes. Eighteen years after the Spice Girls pioneered this look, the simple, form-fitting, minimalist cami is once again a staple, as sported by Kim Kardashian and Emily Ratajkowski.

4. Power Suits

Fall 2018 runways were filled with both traditional pinstriped version of the suit as well as bold takes on the classic ‘80s trend. Here, the Spice Girls show us that it is possible to wear a suit…and still look very sexy.

5. Ugly Sneakers

As you’ve probably heard, hideous dad sneakers are having a huge moment right now. But you know who did it first? The Spice Girls.
