Moncler Just Launched a Carbon-Neutral Puffer Jacket
A new frontier in sustainable outerwear.
With the temperature steadily dropping lower and lower in Canada, if you haven’t yet bought a down jacket for the months ahead (or you’re looking for a new addition to your wardrobe), Moncler has the answer – and it’s as good for the environment as it is for your street cred.
The fabric, lining, buttons and zips on the new puffer have all been made using castor beans, derived from the castor plant. According to a release, “the castor plant itself is a sustainable and renewable source: it does not affect food supply as it is cultivated in arid regions not intended for agriculture, and it requires extremely small amounts of water to grow.” Even more impressively, castor beans help reduce C02 emissions by a huge 30 per cent in comparison to fossil origin sources. The brand also noted that “emissions generated throughout the life cycle of the down jacket are offset through REDD+ certified projects”, specifically those helping to preserve the Amazon rainforest, making the jacket entirely carbon neutral. Finished in a wear-with-everything navy hue, the jacket features a sleek hood and the word “bio” subtly emblazoned on the front pocket of the piece.
This isn’t the first time the Italian luxury brand has created an environmentally friendly item – it has previously launched the Moncler Grenoble Recycled Line. It makes sense for the brand to invest in these new innovations as consultancy firm Bain recently revealed that 80 per cent of millennial luxury customers prefer brands that are socially conscious.
