7 Trends We Spotted At London Fashion Week
Much has been written about the death of Fashion Week. Digital access means you can see everything, anytime. The difficulty faced by traditional print media means fewer editors can get to the shows, and the whole “See Now, Buy Now,” deal? Well, it can make you wonder who fashion week is meant to reach anymore.
But in London, arguably the youngest of the big four (New York, London, Milan and Paris), the industry seemed alive and kicking. London has always been a bit different from the other cities. It’s on it’s own, double decker, speed. Designers like Ashish thrive on this island, as do storied under-the-radar heritage brands like Pringle of Scotland and Mulberry. It’s different from Paris or New York, and with a healthy dose of street fashion on the runway, the audience can change drastically with every catwalk.
Here are seven trends we noticed on the runway at London Fashion Week, Fall 2017.
Blankets
Blankets are the new shawl. They’re large, cozy and sleeping bag-like or borderline inflatable pool toy. From left to right, Pringle, Preen and Mulberry.
Green
If spring is awash with yellow, bright colours continued into fall with purple, red and green (above). From left to right, Mulberry, Christopher Kane, Emilia Wickstead.
Nordic
The Brits obviously like their cozy sweaters and have a long history with cardigans. The fall runways featured various riffs on the sweater with a surprising affection for anything Nordic-snowflake in appearance. From left to right, Ashish, Anya Hindmarch, MM6 Margiela.
Argyle
The argyle pattern comes from the tartan of Clan Campbell, of Argyll in western Scotland, and this plaid has been used since the 17th century in clothing. It’s back. From left to right, David Koma, Huishan Zhang, Emilia Wickstead.
Shearling
We noticed a lot of shearling out on the streets of London and it was visible on the runway too, in dresses, pants and traditional outerwear. From left to right, Christopher Kane, MM6 Margiela, J.W. Anderson.
Tulle ruffles
One of the bright lights on the British fashion scene is Molly Goddard. Her adorable tulle dresses are especially loved by Rihanna, and other designers are embracing the delicate textile. From left to right, Bora Aksu, Huishan Zhang, Molly Goddard.
Overlay
Sheer dresses to be worn over top of an entire look were a popular way to add lacy intrigue to an ensemble. It felt a little 90s, one step beyond the babydoll. From left to right, Molly Goddard, Emilia Wickstead, Simone Rocha.
