Can We Discuss Karl Lagerfeld’s New Beard?

Social media has certainly changed the Haute Couture game. What was once an intimate and extremely exclusive club is now out there for all the world to see. Let’s not forget that, an ‘affordable’ couture evening gown might start at $60,000, so it’s not quite aspirational. Which is why it’s remarkable that, given the explosion of Couture access, one of the biggest deals of late is designer Karl Lagerfeld‘s decision to grow facial hair?
Fashion feeds blew up with news of the 84-year-old’s hipster beard, which was quite a departure from his usual uniform. Lagerfeld is almost always seen wearing a black suit and tie with dark glasses and ponytail. He embarked on the uniform dressing after he famously lost 90 pounds in 2001 because he wanted to wear clothes designed by Hedi Slimane he said at the time. In growing a beard Lagerfeld has joined an esteemed lists of bearded designers, that include Nicolas Ghesquière, Tom Ford and the late Gianni Versace. So while we’re not sure, who, or what, inspired the facial hair, this is, as fashion scribe Suzy Menkes wrote on her Instagram, one look most women will not be copying.
