In an age where brightly-hued bra straps are made to be shown off and the phrase boho-chic allows us to rock Birkenstocks at the office, it’s safe to say that the fashion faux pas has become a thing of the past. Nowadays, style is less about following current trends and rules, and more about self-expression and individuality. Feel like mixing florals with stripes? Or wearing your fave white pants after Labour Day? We say flip “the rules” th bird and go for it!

Flip through to see how our Style Panel has turned fashion faux pas into some seriously covetable looks.

Question 138: Is there even such a thing as a fashion faux pas anymore? Show us one “fashion wrong” that you rock and how. Read the answers now! »

Kira Paran, 29
Edmonton | Northern Style Exposure

I’ll admit, growing up I associated Birkenstock sandals with hippies or people who didn’t get fashion. My common rule for pulling off this fashion wrong? Never wear them with socks! And pairing these sandals with a very trendy item never hurt, like these torn boyfriend jeans.

Kira’s wearing: Top and jeans, Lookbook. Bag, Chloe. Sandals, Birkenstocks.

I consider fashion “faux pas” as guidelines rather than rules. I think that sometimes rules are meant to be broken (i.e. wearing white after labour day). One of the rules I tend to break during the summer is exposing my under garments. I’m sure that some people are largely offended by my peek-a-boo bralettes, but with so many cool strappy backed bras out there it’s one boundary I’m willing to push.

Mo Handahu, 29
Halifax | Lion Hunter

I’m a habitual rule breaker, it’s what I do best! I not only wear horizontal stripes but I add a crazy print just to give a middle finger to fashion rules forced on curvy women. These prints work together because of the blue and white hues. When it comes to style, I’m confident in my outfits and have no problem confessing I’ve had some misses. All that matters is that I’m self-assured in how I dress and no rules will ever be an absolute for me.

Mo’s wearing: Skirt, Etsy, The Tutu Experience. Dress, Thrifted. Shoes, Dorothy Perkins. Glasses, Le Château.

Becky Kung, 30
Calgary | Velvet & Vino

All white used to be against the fashion rules. Now it’s everything and I love pairing it head-to-toe! My style tip is to find a piece in the outfit that adds contrast, such as these colour-blocked sandal heels with the brown tones. Other than that, go all out with white and don’t hesitate to wear it all year round!

Becky’s wearing: Bomber jacket, Club Monaco. Top, GUESS. Skort, Club Monaco. Handbag, Rebecca Minkoff. Heels, Le Chateau. Necklace, Hillberg & Berk.
