Kim Jones Taps Retired Designer Shawn Stussy for Pre-Fall ’20 Collaboration

Today, the world will witness Shawn Stussy’s fashion comeback via a collaboration with Kim Jones, the creative director of Dior Homme, for the brand’s Pre-Fall 2020 show.

The collab, which according to images posted by the brand on Twitter is full of colourful and retro vibes, will be the first collection Stussy, the streetwear pioneer and founder of the ultra-trendy ‘80s clothing brand Stussy, has worked on since his retirement from fashion in 1996.

On an Instagram post, Jones said that he considers Stussy “an artist” and that working with him was such an honour. The Dior creative director also admitted his obsession with Stussy garments as a teen.

“I used to wear it head-to-toe all the time in my teens. It was something I was really, really, really obsessed by. I’ve [still] got boxes of it,” said Jones.

Meanwhile, Stussy also confirmed the collab on Instagram, writing, “Kim has brought me out of retirement to work with him and his Dior family on fall 2020”. Stussy added that there was a good vibe during the project and that the whole experience felt extremely natural to him.

As impressive as it is to bring a designer such as Stussy out of retirement for a collaboration, this is not the first time Jones teams up with a world-renowned artist for a Dior Homme show. Some of Jones’ past collaborations include artists like Kaws, Raymond Pettibon, and Daniel Arsham.

The Dior Homme x Stussy collab is expected to include lots of calligraphy. As anyone who once wore a Stussy garment knows, the brand’s famous logo surged out of the designer’s handwritten signature on the custom-made surfboards he created before moving into the fashion industry.

According to Hypebeast, for this collab, Dior coloured in monochromatic imagery submitted by Stussy. Some pieces required 2,600 hours of beading to complete, whilst others employed Japanese printing techniques to create unique marble-like patterns.

The Dior Pre-Fall 2020 menswear runway, to be unveiled in Miami today, will be the opening act for this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach. The official soundtrack of this collection is About Work The Dancefloor (The Black Madonna Remix) by Georgia, which according to Instagram will set the mood ahead of the show.

Stay tuned.
