Club Monaco is Reissuing Their Nostalgic Vintage Logo Sweaters
Club Monaco is such a ubiquitous retailer of business casual – like J. Crew, or Banana Republic – that it’s easy to forget it started off as a Canadian company.
Founded in 1985 by Joe Mimran (yes, the guy responsible for Joe Fresh), and Canadian designer Alfred Sung, Club Monaco was headquartered right at Avenue and Bloor on Toronto’s Mink Mile until the company was purchased by Polo Ralph Lauren in 1999.
But back in the day, Club Monaco was a CanCon staple, and I should know; My mom used to work there. From 1989 to 1989 my mom worked as a patternmaker for Club Monaco and has the treasure trove of ‘80s vintage to prove it. While she’s got boxes full of ballooning suede leather pants, itchy wool turtleneck dresses, and (gasp) jodhpurs, the one thing I really wish she’d kept from that era is the gigantic sweatshirt emblazoned with the heritage logo crest.
Turn out it’s not such a big deal that the sweater is long gone, because soon it will be freshly available thanks to a collaboration between Club Monaco and Vancouver-based athletic brand Reigning Champ. The capsule collection of retro sweatshirts and tees stamped with the reissued vintage crest hearkens right back to an era when Dallas was the biggest show on prime time television, and a brand-new innovation called Betamax was primed to change the world.
The nostalgia-filled collection launches in stores November 9th, but if you happen to be in Toronto on November 8th, there’s a special pre-shop at Club Monaco’s Bloor Street location in Toronto where the first 250 customers to purchase from the Heritage Crest Collection will receive a limited edition Reigning Champ x Club Monaco tote bag.
