Ballet Flats are Officially Back

Plié your way through spring.

When Dior’s Maria Grazia Chiuri sent a modern dance troop led by Sharon Eyal down the brand’s SS19 runway, the breezy, delicate ballet aesthetic—both the physical art and its accompanying fashion—hooked us. Our bodies may not move the way Eyal and her dancers did, but that isn’t going to stop us from embracing the graceful look.

The soft ballet slippers seen at Dior and Stella McCartney are a departure from the heavy and protective soles of chunky hiking boots and dad sneakers we’ve become accustomed to. Consider the movement toward dainty ballet slippers a metamorphosis as we shed our heavy layers (footwear included) into lighter spring styles.

The ballet flat trend brought to peak popularity by Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face is back with super supple leather and a higher cut toe box, eliminating any risks of toe cleavage. The new take on street styling these sweet slippers is less feminine and more modern, paired with oversized, billowy culottes or structured separates.

Click through for our favourite ballet flats of the season, and prepare to start dancing in the street.
