MFW diary: Our cheat sheet of highlights from a Sunday full of Marni, Dolce Gabbana, Salvatore Ferragamo, Aquilano.Rimondi, and Versus

Sunday may be a day of rest for some, but here in Milan the pace is fast and furious (no time for even a gelato stop!). In a jam-packed day of shows, here are the highlights:

Marni: We saw naïve and childlike daisy prints, ice cream colours, and a new silhouette for Consuelo Castiglioni that focused on a fitted waist and dramatic A-line shapes; that, plus the craftiness we’ve come to expect each season—the embroidery, raffia, crochet, patent, bright trim on spectator bags and shoes—and more geometric prints than high school math class. Oh, and the most drool-worthy earrings of the week.

Dolce Gabbana: Rosemary Clooney belted out “Mambo Italiano,” the set’s festival lights sparkled and it was SHOWTIME with a capital S! Market-fresh hot and spicy eggplant, zucchini, and pepper prints adorned skirts (both full and pencil), corset bras, sheaths, and bloomers as the Dolce Gabbana “lady” romped joyfully down the runway, earrings jangling in shapes of pasta and garlic. At these shows, excess is always best, thus the bejewelled and dazzling gem-encrusted crochets, brocades, and lace. The not-to-be-forgotten parade of pageant-worthy finale corsets made this the feel good show of the week!

Salvatore Ferragamo: Scarf prints are all over the collections this season and Ferrragamo’s tropical jungle prints are some of the strongest and brightest. Working an early ‘80s disco theme were flow-y handkerchief-hem halter dresses and jumpsuits, colour-block pant suits, and cover-worthy gowns. Standout bags were bright-blocked buckets in contrasting strips of leather and suede.

Aquilano.Rimondi: One of the most beautiful and gentle collections of the week, you could practically hear the front row sighing for lady-like mid-calf skirts, bib-front lantern-shape dresses, scrolling architectural patterns, and soothing mint and blush tones—all with a level of  craftsmanship and embellishment to the nth degree.

Versus: Smells like team spirit; with gymnasium floor lines painted in gelato colours, a sporty parade of pastel colours came whipping down the runway, edged in graphic black. There were flippy cheerleader skirts, carwash pleats, sporty hoodies, and cut-out silk and chiffon tank dresses. Oversized clutches fastened with utility clasps and shoes—not exactly the sneaker variety—were strappy, colour- blocked, and sky high.
